Need Help!! Off balance-legs feel weightless

I have had a type of dizzy/off-balance episodes (I call them "gumby legs") for the past 20 years. It is not the typical dizzy spell where the room is spilling around, but it is where I feel like my body is swaying back and forth and then my legs become weightless and I have no sense of where they are in space. I will either fall or grab hold of something and sit down. I have no control of my legs during this time. The episode will usually last for 1 to 2 hours. If I lay down and go to sleep then when I wake up it is usally gone.

Besides my legs feeling weightless I usually have a slight headache, feel very tired and lethargic (mostly in my brain), sometimes my right eye twitches and my legs feel weak. My neck hurts also.

When I am not have an episode I feel generally off-balance. My balance and gait is not good.

One thing I have also noticed is that I get dizzy/off-balanced when I get hot/overheated during sports/dancing/working-out.

General health issues: clicking in left ear; nystagmus in both eyes; a 20 year old neck injury; degenerative disease in lower back; slight hearing lose in both ears (used to fly for commuter airlines); blood pressure is very low (during my last episode my blood pressure was 97/40 laying and 106/49 standing), my blood pressure is usually around 89/56.

The one thing I have changed is I started taking bio identical hormones on 5/14/12. Could this some how be making my symptoms worse? Could it be my blood pressure? Any thoughts on what you think it might be? I am running out of ideas and I am very concerned?

I have been to several types of doctors. Sorry for the long posts

Thanks to anyone for their suggestions or help!

Just two thoughts. It sounds neurological. Have you seen a neurologist? The other is that the difference/ratio in the higher and lower BP numbers can have an effect on lightheadedness and balance, though in my experience not in the wobbly legs issue.

Re: Need Help!! Off balance-legs feel weightless

Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I have been to several neurologists and have had MRIs of the brain, neck, ear canals and lower back. Everything comes back clean except I have a degenerated disc in my lower back which is pretty common and a 20 year old neck injury. I have been to the House Ear Clinic and they ruled out my ears. When I have these episodes it is more than a wobbly feeling in my legs. It is as if my legs are weightless and not attached to my body. It is a sort of dizzy feeling, but in my legs if you will. Like I am on a boat and can't get off it. The only thing they have found is that I have nystamus in my eyes which tells them that my equilibrium is off. I am hoping I can find someone who will think outside of the box as to what might be causing these episodes. Thanks again for your input.

Re: Need Help!! Off balance-legs feel weightless

The issue with your legs is significant in making me think it's neurological, and I wonder whether the nystamus is secondary to something more central/serious. The "room not spilling around" but feeling like "my body is swaying back and forth and then my legs become weightless" sounds brain/neural to me. I don't know anything, but that is how it appears. I would still not overlook a potential heart issue.

You said, "I am hoping I can find someone who will think outside of the box as to what might be causing these episodes." Good look with that. After 11 years of difficult to diagnose issues I have yet to find a doc of any kind that can/will do that.

Cheers,
M.

Re: Need Help!! Off balance-legs feel weightless

Thanks for your additional insight. I will keep going down the neurological path. I have also gone down the heart path as well. It could also be something to do with blood flow. Our bodies are so complex. I will never give up! Thanks again for caring!
