Red face Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc ...

Good day, everyone! I apologize in advance if this is too long for you to keep your attention (I could hardly keep focus while writing it), but I'm absolutely miserable and would be eternally grateful for any help.

I'm a 28 year old female that has always been in great health. I was always super energetic and active, always ate clean and healthy (aside from delicious beer), and was mentally healthy and stable as well.

I moved from Arizona to Washington in January of 2013. In March of 2013, I went to an MD because of a significant ear infection. He prescribed me amoxicillin, which caused me to break out in a rash after the seventh day of taking it. He informed me that the ear infection was gone, and to discontinue taking the amoxicillin. Ever since then, my symptoms have been....

-Brain fog - I feel as if I'm stoned all day every day (and it's not fun). My cognitive function has definitely decreased, though not exponentially. I find myself in deep stares (not deep enough to where I am not aware of my surroundings, though), and I have issues with concentration.

- Dizziness - Not vertigo, but a complete unbalanced feeling. I cannot even walk around without feeling like I'm going to faint.

-Presyncope - Or near-fainting. I've never actually fainted. I will get super dizzy to the point where I feel woozy/lightheaded, but the feeling goes away after sitting for a few moments and focusing on breathing.

-Upper left quadrant pain in my abdomen - It manifests when it feels like it... It's not always present, and I can never pinpoint exactly what it is that brings it on.

-Light sensitivity - Oh, man, do I hate lights! They intensify my symptoms a million times! Okay, maybe not a million. I have to wear these hideous rose colored lenses in my glasses, and I don't even need a spectacle prescription! I have 20/10- vision in my right eye and 20/15 in my left eye, but the lights are killer.

-HUNGER - I'm staaaaaarving! My blood sugar is always normal, and I don't want sugar anyway (it's not hypoglycemia). I want real food - meats and cheeses and veggies! I'm almost never satisfied. I never eat sugary foods (I even stay away from most fruit), and I rarely eat carbs. I DO have a gluten intolerance, so when I allow myself to eat grains, it's brown rice or quinoa, but that's super rare.

-Amenorrhea - Aunt Flo stopped coming to visit all together. I don't know why she's so angry.

-Enlarged lymph nodes in my neck - The cervical lymph nodes for those who know anatomy. This is new, I have yet to have the lovely biopsy.

-Panic attacks - Stores make me freak the out! My chest hurts, it's hard to breathe, heart beats super fast, dizziness intensifies by, well, a lot, I get tunnel vision, I feel anger, my vision is almost distorted like it would be when drunk, and I feel like I'm going to faint in the middle of the store and everyone will just stand there staring at the weird girl who fainted. I'm a woman. We enjoy shopping. I enjoy grocery shopping, especially... Now I dread even driving to the store knowing how uncomfortable I'll be.

The MD I saw for the ear infection ordered an ultrasound on all of my organs, which turned out to be unremarkable, except I have a larger spleen (not swollen, just a "bigger normal"). My blood work for sugars/A1C, thyroid (omg my poor veins have been poked so many times for the thyroid), CBC, etc... and urinalysis tests have all been "normal". He then told me that I just need to "find peace within myself" and shoo'd me away.

I'm now seeing a DO (highly recommend over MD's), and he's sent me to a neurologist who ordered a brain MRI. Normal. I have proof I have a brain! My fiancee did make the point that it doesn't prove I'm smart, though... The MRI did show slightly enlarged neck lymph nodes, so my DO ordered a CT Scan and that simply reconfirmed the enlargement, so now I get a biopsy. Joy.

I've had a ton of blood tests from him also, all normal. They include adrenal gland function, hormonal balances, liver and kidney function, etc... At my last appointment, he said; "You look very healthy and the tests are proving that you are, so I'm at a loss." I appreciated the honesty more than I can express, but it's still disheartening.

I am not fatigued, I am not in pain (aside from my stomach and that's not constant), and I am not depressed.

I'm getting married soon, and I'm afraid I'll be the fainting bride, or will be too sick to have children, or, well, I could list a million other hypochondria scenarios.

If you can shed any light on these miserable symptoms of mine, I would certainly appreciate it.

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc....

I too have been having the same symptoms as you that all started from an extreme head cold ill call it. Then i had a really bad migraine and been stuck like this ever since. I took have the off balance feeling, like im drunk and i could literally pass out at any moment. The only thing that is tolerable is sitting down. When i get up to do anything for any length of time the feeling gets unbearable. I also have left side chest bain and back pain as well. My jaw hurts sometimes and my left arm will ache and so will my left hand. I know it sounds like my heart right...nope had 2 different catdiologists tell me it was fine. Also had 2 mris of my brain. And mra which checks the vessels in my brain, numerous blood tests, spinal tap, endoscopy, chiropractor etc etc. I am a 30 year old male that usta be in peak physical condition. Now i have gained over 30 pounds and can barely walk through the grocery store now. I am making an appointment to see some more specialists as i have been on disability from work cause of this and i need to get it figured out because i truely have no idea. Maybe lyme? Maybe chronic fatigue syndrome? I have no idea. I took have developed anxiety due to this. Not knowing why you feel like this and feeling so badly without any answers would make anyone have anxiety. Anyway if you want to talk more about it just post. You're not alone

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc....

Hey,
Just want to ask if you have been tested for EBV and CMV. That ear infection may have been a result of it and its known to linger. Unfortunately the test only tells that you have had it as some point but doesn't point to when. There is one marker in the test that will show if you have it right now, or in the acute phase. Ask for it. Mono is usually something you get in your teens but you may have escaped getting it until now and sometimes it can reactivate if your immune system is very weak or stressed. And it takes a very long time to get over. It can also cause enlarged spleen and lymph nodes and a multitude of symptoms. I have been ill for over 7 months and that is the only titer that was positive. No doc will acknowledge that its ebv because the test isn't definitive but its something. Ebv is also implicated in chronic fatigue. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to make either go away. Be sure to check your ferritin levels (iron stores) too. Having low ferritin (under 50) is likely to cause fatigue and at very low levels can make you feel dizzy, malaise, and miserable and very susceptible to infection/viruses. If it is below 50 I would prob take otc iron supplements with vitamin C until it gets above 50. Just make sure to check it before taking supplements bc too much iron can cause the same symptoms. Good luck to you! I hope you feel better!

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc....

Thanks for your reply. As a matter of fact i did have mono when i was a teen and am still experience disabling symptoms. I did have some blood work done and it did say the ebv was present and my doctor said it will always be present because i had it when i was young. I still have not had any doctor be able to explain my symptoms. Either they dont know or font tske the time to investigate properly. I have had a decent amount of test. Although none for inner ear. All have came back negative. So obviously there missing something. They dont see it that way tho. Its all in my head im assuming(extreme sarcasm). Thank you for responding and for the well wishes too.

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc....

You could have a paralymph fistula or superior canal disonance. They are rair and you have to see a doctor that has a double degree in ontology and neurology to get diagnosised. Have you been tested for minieres or endolymphatic hydrops.
It is hard to find doctors that will help but don't give up. Dr warren and Dr Wackyum in Portland Oregon are specialist in ear condonditions. I just had the paralymph fistula surgery 3 weeks ago and my brain fog, dizziness and confusion are already better. I still have swelling but I atticapte more improvement. I was told it can talk months for the Brian and nervous system to reacclimate to the hole being closed.
Take care

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc....

Hi. I know that you posted this some time ago but I was wondering if you had an update on how you are feeling and if you were diagnosed with anything? I have had almost the same symptoms (including the lack of periods - but they came back about 5 months ago) on and off (mostly on) for over 2 years. I am a 40 year old woman who works out 5 times a week and nothing ever comes back wrong with me! I did go on ADHD drugs as kind of an alternative treatment for CFS (still not diagnosed with that either) and I no longer an fatigued but still get the brain fog and the rest of it.

Just wondering how you were??

I would go to an ENT, you may have fluid in your ear from the infection. When I moved to another state that's when my strange dizzy feeling started. I think you may have developed allergies from moving to a new environment, do you have congestion?

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc ...

gypsysoul2blame I hope you're still a part of this site... I wanted to check in on you and see how you are doing. While I was reading your post, I had to double check a few times to make sure I wasn't reading an old post of mine!!! The only difference is I do not have a "moment" where I remember the fog starting ( antibiotics or anything). I don't even remember a time before brain fog... Oh, and aunt flow still visits regularly. Not sure whether to say lucky you, or lucky me! . It's been 6 loooong years. I've been to 15+ doctors and been through every test under the sun and get told I'm depressed or it's all in my head. I also get the fainting feeling. My vision has gone completely black before but I haven't hit the floor yet. Grocery stores scare the crap out of me mostly because of having to wait in line to check out. Luckily hubby understands (somewhat) and does most of our grocery shopping. I was also scared of being the "fainting bride" but I made it through the wedding and we are coming up on our 5 year anniversary. I've stopped going to the doctor and I'm experimenting on my own. I know that's not good but I got sick (and broke) from going to doctors just for them to tell me I'm crazy. Well... That's enough ranting. Hopefully you are still a part of this group and we can talk more and compare notes. Maybe together we can figure this out .

Best wishes
Jenn

Question Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc ...

Hi- I know it's been a long time since this post originated, but I am experiencing similar symptoms for the past year. I am wondering if anyone had any answers about what was causing this or resolution to these dizziness issues?

Re: Undiagnosed: Brain fog, dizziness, unbalanced, etc ...

I'm also having similar symptoms.....plus elevated blood pressure Done a bunch of blood tests, EKGs, ultrasounds, echocardiogram, head CT and all normal.

Been to the ER 3 times, the latest just a few days ago. My doctor is baffled. He sent me to ENT today. Waiting for appointment to do visual and hearing tests. Also got appointment with neurologist but not till mid Sept.

This been going on since May. I'm tired of lying down all the time. Went to Walmart today and thought I was going to pass out in the middle of the aisle.
