What does a 1:40 chance really mean?

Hello. I am 19 weeks pregnant with my third child and just got the results back to my AFP. The nurse says a 1:40 chance of Down syndrome. I am trying to make sense of this news. About three weeks ago, my two year old son was diagnosed with Autism and I am still reeling from that news. My 3 1/2 year old daughter is typical, and I had big hopes about this child. On the one hand, I feel we would be the perfect family for a DS child, as we dedicate our life to our kids and are already in the groove of lots of therapists (speech,OT, etc) in our lives. We view any child as a blessing. I am 37 and had one level II sono prior to my AFP results. The perinatologist said everything looked great. He seemed to go very fast and the only time he mentioned Down syndrome was when he said "the child has three bones in his pinky, looks great". Is that true, or can I expect clearer info at 19 weeks (my next levelII) vs. 16 weeks(my first levelII). I feel overwhelmed and in need of information from people who have been there. Thank you!!!!

Can you tell me how everything went? Did you have the child?

Well, I can tell you that an AFP is often the most inaccurate test - it often gives you a "false positive" both for downs and for Spina Bifida- I would go ahead with the level 2 ultrasound and an amnio, before you make any decisions.

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate, just remember that God never gives us more than we can handle.

Good Luck to you!!
