Advice on teaching - Down Syndrome Message Board

I am a 1st year teacher of a severly developmentaly delayed downs student who is in Elementary school. We are having some issues with the student in question refusing to listen to adults and proceeding as they wish. I am currently using time out and a reward program for trying to control bad behaviors, but they do not seem to comprehend why they are placed in time out or how to "earn" a daily reward. Does anyone have an advise on ways to address the behavior issues. They are not violent or aggressive, but is passive aggressive and very very stubborn.

I would need some more information on the child you are working with but my guess is you are just not using the right reinforcer. There are many: verbal praise, activities, token....maybe a token system just isn't motivating to him. I would love to help you out but I would need more info.
