Question HELP ME! 2yr old DS LITTLE GUY.

bgdffgdmagenta6

Hi there.
It has been a very long time sience I have looked for help. I have a 2 year old, ( Kaid ) with Trisonomy 21. Kaid is having a hard time with his anger. Iam not too sure what is going on, being a new mom, and new to Down Syndrome, I wanted to see if other could offer some help. Kaid is not talking, though we are trying to sign with him. I think that it's more hard on me becasue I really want to here " Momma" He can say dada. I have tried to get connected with support groups here in Oregon, but they are quite far away from me, I would just love to talk to some other parents that are going though what I am going through. I know that Kaid is a Bright little guy, I want to help him out the best I possibly can, I am just having a really hard time doing it. If anyone can send me a little reply to say maybe what worked for you, or things that are helping you with your child, we would LOVE it! Thanks so much!
I am really ready to pull my own hair out...

Fustrated mom

Re: HELP ME! 2yr old DS LITTLE GUY.

Hi Andrea,
Your son maybe getting angry because he may be a little frustrated because he cannot communicate, learning sign is a good thing but also say the word's when you sign, he will eventually start saying them when he dose the sign language. You son is also two, I;m sure you've heard the expression terrable two's. When My son with DS was born, I had two other children. When David, that my son with DS, when he was naughty or had some anger issue's, he had to sit on the chair and have a time out. These kids are smarter than you think, just because they cannot talk dose not mean there not smart. They can figure out how to get there way and yank your string's just like a normal child can. I taught my son right from wrong right from the start, just like my other children. When my son would want something like a cookie, I would make him try to say the word, he would try, it didn't sound to much like it but he made the effort, then I would praise him and give him the cookie. I was also told by my son's doctor to try to get them to drink from a straw, I guess the sucking is good exercise for the tounge, it strenthen's there muscle's in there tounge for better speech. I was albe to find plasic cups with a built in straw, now if your son still is drinking from a bottle, that is good sucking exercise also.

Re: HELP ME! 2yr old DS LITTLE GUY.

My little guy, Ty, still has anger issues and he is 6. I know that it is directly related to his inability to get his point across. We sign, we use PECS, we do whatever is humanly possible to help him get his point across and sometimes I still do not know what he is trying to say. When he was younger he used to hit himself in the face and head. Then it dialed down a bit and he hit himself in the thigh. Then kicking walls. And now he kicks the air. Sometimes a wall now and then. I feel his frustration. All I can offer you is that it will get better. I never thought he would be able to talk. He is talking. Now, I can't always understand him!! But it's progress!! And sign language is a blessing. Hang in there. I promise it will get better. The challenges are just beginning. But each one you face will make you stronger for the next. I've made it 6 years now. And there were days when I didn't know if I could go on. If I was good enough. If I was doing enough. I miss two... he was commando crawling then!! I never thought he would walk!! One of the many things I have taken away from having a child with DS is that I get to enjoy each bit of progress he makes so much longer than parents with "normal" children. How lucky is that???? Hugs to Kaid!!

Kim
