Sleep Apnea and down syndrome? - Down Syndrome Message Board

Just wanting to know, is there anyone that has a child or knows of someone that has a relitive with ds that also has sleep apnea? If so, when does this occur? Is this appearant from birth? How can you tell if you should be concerned? Just wondering.

My daughter has sleep apnea...it is not always apparent from birth, sometimes develops later. My child's is worse during different times of the year...we are in a bad season. It causes her to have restless sleep and to wake frequently during the night. She wants to sleep on an incline, so we frequently spend the night in the Lazy-Boy chair. Can't wait for the surgery, as I haven't had a full night's sleep since early October.

my son, he is 11, has sleep apnea. they did sleep studies on him. He now sleeps with an O2 tube at night. He wasnt getting enough O2 when he was sleeping and would wake up gasping for air. I dont know of any surgery that would help since he is still growing, but the O2 does help.

She had her adenoids removed, the doctor felt that would help aleviate the apnea...it did for the most part, but she is still a horrible sleeper.
