Re: behavior problems(yelling) need help!

Hi there! Our son will be a month old next month, but we're trying to get a jump start on the communicating. I just ordered a book called Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome - A Guide for Parents. It's put out by WOODBINE HOUSE I was given Babies with Down Sydrome by WOODBINE when Owen was born and it's awesome. Our Early Intervention helper that comes twice a week has been teaching us basic sign language since he was about nine months. I don't know that he's learned any of it yet, but we'll continue and he should pick it up. My cousins' son has Autism and doesn't speak yet (he's three), and they've done really well signing. It's just a couple of ideas for ya. Best Wishes & God bless!

Re: behavior problems(yelling) need help!

I also have a beautiful 4 year old daughter with DS.

What I personally have to do is slow her down and have her repeat the word and by a matter of deduction I can usually determine her need. She will scream at me if I don't understand so I calmly sit down with her and ask her things that sounds like what she wants. I have had a very high success rate with this. If she can's say it, I will ask questions, have her point if need be, or take me to where she has her request.

She is is in daycare and learns things there that I am not aware of so can be frustrating to disseminate what she wants. I am a single mom and I just start backtracking on things she may have done at daycare or pre-school or at her dads. With patience I have had great success. She is so excited when I understand what she wants. Her verbal skills are vastly improving which helps. I never signed with her either. She just wanted to talk. Course, I am the only one who really understands her.

Follow your son's cues. Try to redirect his attention to a something calming and ask questions or show pictures, even let him point and of course sign language is great too. Just wasn't for us.

Best to you and big hugs to your son. I only have the one child and I have never known a love like this. Totally infatuated and ready to pull my hair out. But what parent isn't--with any child.

Keep us posted.

Kim (mom to beautiful Dani with DS)

Re: behavior problems(yelling) need help!

Hi,
Your son is frustrated because he cannot communicate, We did go threw that with our son when he was that age also. He had a teacher who told us to purchase a book on sign language, she told us to do just basic work signing -short and brief, Like the word "more" ment hitting your elbow with your other hand, When we did the basic word signing we were told to also say the word with it, so if we signed (apple)-we said the word with it, eventually he learn to sign certain words and then also learned to say them, This was a great idea because he could communicate with us.
Good Luck
Karen

Re: behavior problems(yelling) need help!

have you considered a behaviour management plan? Worked WONDERS for my 7 year old daughter. saved her life probably because one of us was feeling like strangling her sometimes! (of course we'd never lay a finger on her - but it was tough!)

check out this one: coastprofessional.ca

Re: behavior problems(yelling) need help!

There are some communication devises that are available that you can starting learning with your Son how to use. My son will be 8 next month. We've been working with a devise for only a few months now - and the improvement that I've seen from his decline in fustration is incredible. The devises begin very simple, easy to use, portable and convenient. Something like going to McDonald's can be handled with a picture of chicken nuggets and a pic of a hamburger .... he could then go up to the counter and just press the pic of the nuggets. The devise would then say - in your recorded voice - "I'd like a Chicken Nugget happy meal please". The self satisfaction that our little guy gets from being understood is so moving. He is gaining self confidence, and is having so many fewer compliance issues in school ...... first step is to check with your pediatrician who can order a speech evaluation. From there the speech specialist can pair a devise that is appropriate for you son at this stage. Some isurance plans cover the cost of the devise I believe. Or if you are involved with any early education program in your local school district, they too can assist. Worth investigating, for sure.
