Down Syndrome & Thyroid malfunction

My 21 year old daughter has down syndrome. Her thyroid goes back and forth from hyper to hypothyroidism. She has lost 14 pounds over the past months. She has extreme mood swings, intolerance to heat/cold, problems with balance, etc. Her endocrinologist would like to remove the thyroid. There are other "options" such as radio-active iodine treatment or medication. We are tying to make the best decision.
