Question regarding drug levels in your body

I'm not quite sure how to phrase this, but does anyone know, if you're taking more than one medication, (in my case, celexa, klonopin, and currently penicillin) does the fact that your liver has more drugs to "get rid of" effect the length of time an indivicual drug remains in your system? (ie--would the fact that I'm taking penicillin make the klonopin stay in my system longer?) Thanks in advance for any info!

Re: Question regarding drug levels in your body

These are good questions for your pharmacist. However, I do know that you should have no problem taking penicillin with Klonopin. There are many classes of antibiotics and the only type that I know of that can be a problem with Klonopin are the macrolide antibiotics like azithromycin, biaxin, clarythromycin, or erythromycin.

Penicillins are, well... penicillins(!) not macrolides, and should pose no problem with Klonopin absorption.

Re: Question regarding drug levels in your body

ilovethenow,
Excellent question. The liver has many different enzymes it uses to metabolize and activate or eliminate drugs. Some drugs will increase the levels of certain enzymes and cause increased metabolism of certain drugs, thus lowering their levels in your body. Some drugs are metabolized by the same enzymes, compete with each other, and cause drug levels to elevate. We will not get into how drugs are influenced by the kidneys, fat-solubility, acidity of the stomach, food interactions, time of day taken & on & on. Anyway, zuzu8 is right, the 3 drugs should be OK to take together. Why do you ask?

Thank you both for your replies. The reason I asked was because of a drug test that didn't really have anything to do w/ the drugs I mentioned (although I do take the listed prescriptions), but I didn't want to get "off topic." Sorry for any confusion.
