I've not taken Adderall, but I've taken both Dextroamphetamine and Methylin (sp?) to counteract the effects of the narcotic pain medications I was taking. I also had symptoms of Adult Attention Deficit Disorder and, though never formally diagnosed, I believed it was a contributing factor in my Dr. agreeing to prescribe the stimulants. As I was perusing the pain management boards (I just found this site today) I found that there are a number of pain patients that are taking Adderall to counteract the drowsy-ing effects of their narcotics. You might check over there for experiences with that specific drug.
This past December I had a pain pump surgically implanted so that I wouldn't need to take nearly 1200 mgs of narcotic pain meds a day. It helped the pain but I just couldn't stand the multiple side effects. My pain management Dr. worked to hook me up with a pain pump specialist who has an excellent reputation. He even got the specialist to take me on though he was not taking new patients at the time. During the surgery, however, my sciatic nerve was damaged, and now I have a totally NEW kind of pain to deal with. BTW: The pump seems to work well for the chronic pain I was experiencing, but I've been unable to put it to the high-activity test due to the new pain and restrictions that are a result of the surgical error.
So while I only get 3mg of morphine a day (directly into my spinal column) plus .25 mg up to 4x/day as needed using a bolost (sp?), I am now on massive quantities of Gabapentin daily, once again making me drowsy and stupid. I am seeing the specialist tomorrow to discuss what to do about the sciatic nerve and it will be interesting to see if he will agree to prescribe a stimulant of some kind to counter the effects of the Gabapentin. I tried to get him to write a script based on a phone conversation (and he has all of my past medical records from the pain mgmt Doc) but he said he wouldn't do it until he sees me.
Sorry - way more info than you needed, I'm sure. In case you forgot (since it was waaay back at the beginning of this msg) my response to you is 1) Yes, people do take Adderall and other stimulants to counter some of the effects of narcotics, and 2) many of them seem to be on the pain management board.
Here's something else I've discovered to help counter some of the other side effects of opioid use: Two Activia yogurts a day keeps the constipation away. TMI?
Best wishes to you.
PS: This post is so long and it's so late that I'm not going to preview it. Any and all mistakes can be blamed on medication.
