Help me understand... anyone out there?

My 11 year old has shown no signs of understanding what is being taught at school. He has been tested for ADD, ADHD, etc but does not have any of these. He just seems to have a low IQ is what I have been told..but I differ since it may not just be low IQ but something else added to it. He cannot comprehend anything that is taught, spoken to at school. He is not a restless child but has low social skills. He sincerely is a hardworking child and the only thing he remembers from school is the home work he has to do. He does not understand jokes and is dumbfounded when spoken to. Just replies in Yes or No. What does he have? Is it a combination of various things...please help. He is a very discplined child, wakes up on time, manages his time well. He often is very confused. He seems to be haphzard in speaking. Pl let me know what this could be.

Winnie, I see you posted a while ago and hope you got some information since then. If not, maybe I can offer some insight. Having worked with special ed kids for 8 years now and also having a special ed son, I can relate to your concern and frustration. It sounds like your son has been tested for ADD and ADHD but has he been tested for a learning disability? That would include an intelligence test, speech and language testing, reading, math, academics. etc. These tests will show were there might be any weaknesses. If he's already had these tests at school, it might be a good idea to have neuropsychological testing done. This is not within the school system and most insurance companies will cover it. It is a more in depth testing. You also explain that he has trouble with social skills and comprehension but has a routine in place. This might point to aspbergers/autism/spectrum disorder. It could be so many different things. It could even be anxiety that is making him confused. You could also talk to his pediatrician. They can usually point you in a better direction.

I wish you well. It's hard when you know your kids are having trouble and you don't know how to help them.
