| Can't Swallow after Stroke
Hi there, my father has had a stroke and he cannot swallow at all the moment. He does not need a ventilatory to breathe but is currently incubated to make sure that his saliva does not go down into his lungs.
They are suggesting a Tracheotomy to protect his airways but from whatever I am reading this seems unnecessary. He already has a feeding tube and can breathe on his own.
He is currently in ICU (purely because he is incubated) and we are looking to get the tube out but are concerned about his swallowing - ie his saliva. He already has a feeding tube in his nose.
Is a tracheotmy really necessary at this stage?
