Hi everyone, I am new here, but not to healtboards. I usually post on the fibro board but unfortunatly I am having some sort of digestive problem and I need some insight. I have had gerd for 6 years or so and have been on omeparzole 20 mg 1x daily pretty much without incident for the last 6 years. Every now and then I would feel some heartburn breakthru but it has worked for me. Well then suddenly last Friday I started getting the feeling of phlemmy lump in throat/food not going down easily/liquids feeling trapped in my throat with the phlegm. I know it's gross but thats the only way to describe it. Also, let me be honest here, i suffer from SEVERE anxiety, and have not been following a gerd friendly lifestyle. Spicy, greasy food, chocolate, coffee, mint gum all the time, tomato products and I smoke, and the weekly margaritas on friday night. Now, I guess I have taken for granted that my prilosec would always work then boom. I feel like I cant swallow. I went to my gastro and he is doing a scope on monday but I am SO SCARED that he is going to find something sinister like barretts or worse. My dad had esophageal cancer 16 years ago and beat it! He is still with us thank God but because of this family history and my new sudden symptoms I am REALLY SCARED of what the egd results are going to be. Does anyone have any ideas or similar stories to relate? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Hi, I'd say, don't get yourself all lathered up. 1st off, generally only 0.2% of GERD sufferers will get cancer.
2nd, it's very possible for you to have dysphagia and stricture without anything to do with cancer. From what I've seen, many people suffer with that who are not going through cancer. My own mother had this problem several years ago - believe me, it was bad. She'd frequently not be able to swallow and often regurgitated - yes, even in restaurants. Finally we got her to go to specialists regularly, and they found she had some reflux problems. After being on Protonix for some time, she stopped that whole problem. She also stopped coughing so much, which was also a problem for her, which she assumed was unrelated.
I know you've been on PPIs already, but I think you may find this is just another something that's turned up, and maybe you'll try different PPIs.
Rebel...thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad your Mother is feeling better and was able to get over her horrible symptoms! THat gives me hope and helps me feel a bit more positive about everything. I'm still worried because like I said, i suffer from anxiety, but I'm trying to be postivie. Thanks again Rebel, you're a doll.
i have had gerd and anxiety for years...and yes the lump is VERY common in gerd and anxiety....the chance of you having eso cancer or barrets is VERY small,,,believe me i feel your pain because i felt the same way as you.....
Missjay, I'm in a very similar position to you. My Dad has esophageal cancer (unfortunately, he did not beat it) and I started having lots of reflux issues last year. I was so scared too that the biopsy would show Barretts or cancer. Everything was fine. Try not to worry. The chances that you have either or these diseases is very very small. I would try to limit the "bad" foods though. I used to eat lots of spicy food, but don't anymore. I do still eat chocolate though! -- just try to limit it.
I'm so happy for you!! I think we all worry, with these symptoms, but those of us who have seen someone with esophageal cancer probably worry even more. What did your doctor recommend you do regarding your gastritis?
My endoscopy in July showed "mild gastritis" but I wasn't given any treatment for it.
