Post Lost my voice, why?

Yes, I lost my voice because I have a god-aweful cold. Everyone kept asking me today "Aw! Are you ok?! Don't cry!" because my voice was all cracked up, when I even had a voice. I just got to wondering what makes you loose your voice, well, what does?
