Unhappy Tonsillectomy

Hello,

I have been reading everyone's post for the last couple of weeks. Especially the T&A Surgeries. I am due to have mine removed this Wednesday at 8am. I am nervous to say the least and I am 40 years old. The only thing I have heard is that it is so, so painful and yes I am a nervous wreck. I still believe that I am making the right decision even at my age.
I have had a severe case of Tonsil Stones for the last year and it has only gotten worse and I mean worse. It is so bad now that I smell it when I breath. I pick stones out of my Tonsils 3 or more times a day and I just could not take it anymore.
I know that a lot of people here have had their Tonsils removed. Any advice positive or negative would be greatly appreciated.

i had mine out 4 months ago. the surgery has greatly improved my health, i havent caught a thing over winter.. wahoo. dont be nervous, its a real simple procedure... you'll be in quite abit of pain upto 2 weeks after the operation and your mouth will taste bloody awful. *make* sure you eat lots especially toast, crisps etc as rough food will wash the nasty stuff away. days 6 - 10 are usually the worst so expect pain.... AND keep away from crowds as you dont want an infection, i had to go back in twice because of bleeding (no fault of my own)!!!! good luck and get plenty of rest

Re: Tonsillectomy

Hey Im 18 years old (I actually turned 18 1 week before surgery) The surgery wasn't that bad at all. The worst part actually was everything I worked up in my own head!!! I had to arive early to the hospital so I could change into my gown (your aloud wearing your underware and socks no bra) then I had to give a urine sample to make sure I wasnt pregnant because the anestetics could kill a baby. After that they started an Iv in my mind that was something I worked up to be really bad it wasn't just a moment of pain the worst thing with the IV was I had to wait 2 hrs for my surgery and since I wasnt use to the Iv I had to pee every 1/2 an hour. When it was my turn my dr came down to joke with me one last time then his staff took me to the operating room. When I was in there all I remeber is they will hook you up to a heart monitor to monitor heart rate, pulse, and blood preasure. Also you will be fastened in with a seat bealt. Thats all I remember about the actuall surgery. Next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery. That part was a little ruff they had to give me a shot for the nausea I was feeling, (Thats normal expecially since I had never had anestetics) In Recovery for the first 1/2 an hour or so no one is aloud comming back then they will alow your parents,or who ever back(at least thats how they did it for me) Before they will let you leave you have to be able to pee once and drink some water with a disolved pain pill. By the way thats the best advice I can give is drink drink drink and it wont hurt as bad. The 6 and 7th day is so far the ruffest for me but it would be worse if I let my self get dehydrated. When your getting ready to leave the hospital. Don't get yourself up to fast!! I tried to push myself while getting ready to go home and I ended up having to stay in the hospital for an extra hour because I turned white and was lightheaded.
All in all it hasn't been to bad!! Just keep in perspective that this will help!!!!!!

Here is a list of foods that I have been using::
~Jello is good expecially when taking pain pills just slip your pill inside a down it goes!!
~Also pudding isn't bad as long as you drink something with it if you don't then you build mucus up back there!!
~Ice Chips are a blessing they are the best thing you can do for yourself!!!
~Sherbert and popcicles are also good
~ And you must get lots of water and juices and stuff to drink!!!!!!!!!

I know lots of people say ice cream is good but I would stay away it causes a lot of mucus!!! And if you want something warm to eat try broth's I haven't been able to eat anything with bits of chicken in it. Only the broth!! And don't be suprised if you don't eat anything I couldn't eat anything from day 4-day 9 but I know others who ate the whole time. Hope this helps Keep me informed!!!

Alleycat, what pain meds did they give you?
My doctor decided that I would stay in the hospital overnight, I am happy about that. I am a little nervous about the pain and I am not worried about being sick because I have had surgery in the past. I know in the end it will be worth it, no more tonsil stones, yyeeaa.

Well at first the doctor gave me percocet with codeine (75 of them) however I went thru the whole bottle in less than a week so then they put me on viccodin. The pain was pretty bad though because I almost never take any meds except a tylenol every once in a while.
