Cool Day 9 of Tonsillectomy

Hello everyone,

I awoke this morning feeling pretty well, no complications at all. My throat just felt a little dry and that makes your throat hurt a little more than normal until I get it nice and moist. It is still important to stay hydrated, so I drink about a gallon of water or more a day. I don't think I have ever drank this much water in my life.

I had to leave my house yesterday for the first time, it went pretty well and the weather was just beautiful. It was a little over 60 degrees, I enjoyed that a lot. I just made sure I was still covered well especially my ears. I had to go up to my employer then I decided that I would say hi to everyone.

I am the Manager of a research and development lab. It is a very small company that employees about 50 people. I have about 3 people directly under me, but I manage the whole lab. It seems that they are lost without me. I plan to go back to work next Thursday, but I can go back Monday if I like. I will probably go back Monday, since I feel good and I am ready to get back to my routine. I really miss going to the gym and riding my Treadmill.

My ENT told me that it was totally up to me, so I am going back Monday. I am not 100 percent and that will not probably be for another couple of weeks, but I think I will be okay. The only thing is that it takes me awhile to eat my food, but I can handle that also.

Re: Day 9 of Tonsillectomy

From what my ENT and his office staff said today, I am going to be in so much pain. The two women said they had theirs' out last year and if they knew who much pain they were going to be in they would have never have done it. But they added they were glad that they did it. Does that make any sense to you. I told them that I will be fine. It's going to hurt I know that. Giving birth was no picnic but I survived without any drugs. By the way I will be getting liquid Demerol. He told me to eat as soon as I could and I would get better faster. I guess to keep the scabs from either forming or staying too long. I plan on taking the drugs regularly and go on with my life as best as I can. I think if you sit around and feel sorry for yourself and complain how much pain you are in. I don't have time to sit around and feel the pain. I don't care how much it hurts life goes on and I will try as best as I can to go on as normal as possible.

Forgive me but I am sick and tired of everyone warning me about the pain. What the hell am I suppose to do? I need them out and that's that. And just to prove everyone wrong, I probably will go back to work as soon as possible and deal with the pain.

Thanks for listening to me vent. You make it sound like how I image I will handle it. My doctor told me that he has done over 5,000 tonsilectomies and hasn't had any bleeders in 22 years. I feel confident that he will take mine out and I will not feel comfortable but it will get better over time.

Re: Day 9 of Tonsillectomy

Oh and he said adults don't have adenoids and that I had a deviated septum, but that was another surgery for a later date. (that will be the one that really knocks me for a loop)

Re: Day 9 of Tonsillectomy

I didn't think it was as bad as everyone says it is either. I'm at my 11th day of recovery, and feel fine. I'm 36, and had an old fashioned tonsillectomy (no lasers or special instruments). He just went in there and cut them out, and whatever else they do. And he said mine were really bad, it took him 90 minutes and he told my wife before the surgery it would only take 15. Granted, the first few days were pretty painful. Actually, it was only painful when I swallowed. But I took two vicodin every 3 hours around the clock for the first 5 days, so I wasn't feeling much pain at all. I think by staying on top of the drugs and taking them consistently I avoided a lot of pain. I just would eat jello and chicken broth, along with a bowl of ground up ice and it wasn't so bad. But I feel pretty good now, I already had my post op appointment and everything is fine. I still have a bunch of scabbing in the back but it isn't painful at all anymore and should go away soon. I was pretty nervous going into this but it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.

As long as you keep on your pain meds Im sure you will survive I was told the only reason I had such a horrible recovery is because they were inflamed when he took them out. My surgery lasted 1and 1/2 hrs although my parents were told it would take 20-30 mins.
