Thumbs up Day 10 of Tonsillectomy

Hey everyone,
I woke up this morning and my throat was a little dry, so of course more water. I can tell that my throat is healing up nicely. I did not need a pain pill when I ate dinner last night so I believe its getting better and better each day. There is still a little throat pain, but its tolerable. I have my checkup on Wednesday. My Uvula is still swollen, but I can tell that it is getting smaller each day.
I am returning to work Monday and I realize that my throat will still be a little painful for awhile and I really think I will be okay. I am getting a little bored sitting here at home. I am going to go out for awhile today and I am going to have my hat on of course. I am really ready to get back to my routine and I really miss working out at the gym. I am not going to start back at the gym until after the doc visit.
All in all it wasn't as bad as I thought. I really stressed myself out worrying over this because everyone was telling me that I was going to be in such awful pain. One co-worker of mine had her Tonsils out by the same doc and she told me that is was not going to be that bad. You know how people can be it seems that they can always take the worst of something and scare you to death. I hope that I have helped some who are thinking about having the procedure done or helped the persons who are getting ready to have it done.
Good luck to you and if I can help in any way I will be more than happy too. I am POOP FREE!!!!!!!

Talking Re: Day 10 of Tonsillectomy

Thats good it sounds like the worst is behind you! It's good to get back to work as soon as possible I was off work for a month and I really missed not having any money on the last paycheck! It will still take probably about a week for your uvula to go back to normal size but it shouldn't take to long. The pain only gets better from here you still may be a bit sore but the worst pain you should have now is if you sneeze or yawn! Ouch (It still hurst me to yawn).

Re: Day 10 of Tonsillectomy

oohh, I forgot all about sneezing. Brings back awful memories. Knowing I was going to sneeze, dreading it and knowing there was nothing I could do to stop it.

One of the things I remember is how it took me so long to eat 'cuz I had to relearn how to swallow. Think my tonsils were just so huge that I had all that extra room back there. Or I'd swallow wrong when drinking and have stuff shoot out my nose.

Just remember once you're back to work to keep a bottle of water close by and drink drink drink constantly to keep things moist. So easy to get busy with stuff and forget.

Re: Day 10 of Tonsillectomy

Hi MissLady, Thanks for all your honesty about your tonsillectomy. I am going to follow your advice as well as Brandon's and make sure I stay up on my meds and drink, drink, drink. Do you have a bad taste in your mouth all the time? I read somewhere that if you chew gum it promotes swallowing which in fact helps the healing process. Because you are keeping your throat moist. Did you drink Gatorade or just plain water? I am putting my shopping list together to ensure I have everything I need when I get home. As I said my doctor said to eat as soon as possible. He didn't really say what to eat, but to try and eat what I could to maintain my strength. I just can't wait to get this over with. Did you have trouble talking after your surgery? For how long? Do you think just taking Tylenol in the day and the strong stuff to sleep at night is tolerable after the 3rd day? I have a feeling one of my idiot friends will come over to visit and expect me to hold up a conversation while she just goes on and on and doesn't hear me say I can't talk. I will definately have to be drugged up for that visit. Just to get her to go away.

How is your diet now? Are you back to eating regular foods yet or are they still soft and mushy? I was thinking about drinking Slimfast for nutrition and to follow some kind of diet to accelerate my weight loss. I hope to make this a learning process for my brain and stomach. Maybe I can retrain it to eat small amounts and be satisfied. Have you weighed yourself lately?

Re: Day 10 of Tonsillectomy

Hey Baseballmom,
You will need to stay up on your pain meds. I tried to take the Tylenol in the daytime and it did not work because when you do eat something it gets quite uncomfortable. The best time to eat will be about an half an hour after you take you pain meds. The only food I ate was soup and popsicles plus the water. I only drank the water but you can drink juice if you like. You can't have anything with acid in it and that includes orange juice. I would stay away from the diary because it builds mucus in the back of your throat which causes you to have to spit out that crap.
If you talk too much your throat will begin to hurt, so I would limit the talking if I were you. I am back to eating normal foods now and I lost 6 pounds in one week. The popsicles helped me out a whole lot because they were cold. I was already doing the ediets before my surgery and I am on it now plus I am working out at the gym. The weight that I have lost I will keep off because I only eat 1200-1300 calories a day. I lose about a pound a week. You will lose weight whether you are trying or not because there is not much you can eat.
One more thing, you will be constipated and that is a miserable feeling, so I suggest you get some type of suppositories. I was really bloated from the pain pills and being constipated that was miserable. I did not want to take anything by mouth because I knew that it would have made me feel worse. I had some water pills from awhile back that I got from the doc and I took it. I went to the bathroom about 10 times in 4 hours. Just keep that in mind. Oh, I really didn't have a bad taste in my mouth at all.
I hope this helps. When are you having the surgery done? Please keep me posted on you recovery.
