Buki Tonsillectomy Day Two - Ear, Nose & Throat Message Board

Well, day two really sucked (actually starting overnight after day one). So much for 'no nausea' in the aftermath of surgery. It just kicked in late! I couldn't keep anything down. No water. No meds. The stuff that came up was gross and scary-- very green. No fresh blood though, so that was good. After 12 or so gut-wrenching hours, doc called in a prescription for anti-nausea suppository. I took one... and it was a miracle. Haven't thrown up since and feel way better (though a side-effect of the anti-nausea med is dry throat so i have to wake up every hour or so to keep drinking). I'm hoping day three cuts me a break. i need to shower and brush my teeth! That's my story so far...

Thats gotta bite!!! I only got sick once and it was day 9 I think the only reason I got sick though was because of the meds I was taking.

I got sick from the morphine drip and hurled for quite some time. but I knew if I could barf like that after having my tonsils out and I didn't start bleeding -- I was going to be okay. Still felt like insert expletive, but I had one less worry.

Ha! That's true. I kept waiting for the blood to gush during one of my hack-fests (there certainly wasn't much by way of food and water in my stomach!). Friday nite was by far the worst cause I couldn't tolerate the meds so I had both insane pain and nausea. Today (day 4?) has been much better. I've switched over to extra-stength tylenol by day and Tylenol PM at nite. Pain has been tolerable in hour or two stretches. I'm starting to get restless and even hungry! Now, if only I could swallow... my glands are very swollen. I feel like I've had strep, swollen glands and root canal all in one day. I'm getting too old for this stuff... :-)

I know I sound like a broken record, but drink drink drink lots of water. Chew on ice. Otherwise your throat's going to feel "sticky" and your ears are going to hurt (dehydration). I think I was good for about 2-3 hours and then would need pain killers. Was given some nasty liquid tylenol w/codeine -- orange flavor and burned going down, so I'd use a tepid water chaser.
