To all those out there who recently had their tonsils removed, I have one question please.

How long after the surgery did it take before you started eating real, normal foods again.

I am on day 11 post-op and am still in pain. I expected to be in pain, but I didn't expect the degree of the pain. Anyway, it just seems like it's going to be awhile before I can get some real food in me.

Hi, I had my tonsils out on February 26th, it will be two weeks this Thursday. I have been eating regular foods for about 4 days now. Started out slowly with soft things like oatmeal and worked my way up..today I had nacho chips and a Beef wrap. The only things that really bother me now are soda (burns), and fruit/vegetable juice (love V-8, but it hurts like he**). My throat is still a little sore, and I have to take smaller bites, but so far, so good.
I'm sorry that you're still in pain, I have to say that having my tonsils out was one of the most painful things I have ever done...and I've had 2 kids !! On the up side, I lost 10lbs. What pain meds did your doctor give you?

Hey Amy
I had my tonsils out December 12th! It was a tramatic expereince but one that I am glad for! I feel so much better with them out now! However it was a good 2 and a half weeks before I could attempt to eat solid foods again and even then I could only eat after pain meds. Start out slow with Mashpotaoes or scrambled eggs. Hope you feel betta soon!

It's been exactly one month since my tonsils were yanked and I'm able to eat just about anything, though my appetite is definitely screwed up from two-plus weeks of ice chips, scrambled eggs, etc. It took about three weeks to get through a meal w/o feeling very conscious of every swallow. I was most comfortable eating mid-day. Evening meals were harder to tolerate. Good luck. It does get better!

I had my tonsils out last summer...like you, I was miserable. Apparently the pain depends on how well connected those little buggers are! The surgeon who took mine out commented that they were connected way down my throat and he apparently went down as far as he felt was safe. Two weeks after, the pain was still considerable.

I was also one of those rare cases to suffer the dreaded complications...at exactly two weeks, I was feeling absolutely terrible, coughed once or twice and opened up the sites...bled like a stuck pig!

Once they fixed me back up, it was only a matter of about two weeks before I was feeling much better.

Stick with the soft foods and if it is painful, don't hesitate to get your doctor to give you something for the pain!
