Early December I came down with a cold, and immediately noticed something in my throat that felt like I had eaten popcorn and it was stuck. I went to the doctor and he put me on antibiotics for the cold.
Late January, still with this thing in my throat and still either completely without voice or very hoarse, the doctor used the scope with the camera into my nose and down my throat. He said he saw a lump midline and referred me to an ENT specialist for a biopsy. Four days later in the office of the specialist, he was more concerned with my lack of voice and when he used the camera scope, he said my left side vocal cords were weak. No mention of seeing a lump.
He prescribed methylprednisolone which I took for a week.
During that week, I had the most horrible cold. I coughed a great deal, alot of flem, sore throat, no voice, fever, and the thing in my throat felt very large. I am finished with the meds now, and altho the cold is getting better, I still have a very hoarse voice and the thing in my throat is again very noticeable.
The thing feels like its on my tongue, farther back than where my tonsils would be if I had tonsils. It is very obvious that something is there, and when I eat or take pills, they get stuck in it and just sit there in my throat.
I go back to the specialist on the 14th and he said he will order an MRI and other xrays.
I have been unable to find any diagrams online which would give me an idea where this thing could be attached to.
Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Hey! I just happened to see your post...
I was wondering if you could see another doctor for another opinion...somebody somewhere else? Sometimes doctors have not heard of certain things, and or don't bother to check things out, throughly(not trying to insinuate that your doctor is bad or anything...just wanted to put this idea out for you,...so you can get one or more ideas of "WhAt" is in your throat...and how a doctor will be able to treat it!
Not every doctor is a good one, trust me! I have been there, and have heard stories from friends that know!
I really hope that you can get the help that you need, I wouldn't think that it's terribly fun to go thru what you are going thru, and I would prefer to know, everything, myself!
I am one of the millions of people in this country who does not have health insurance. The first doctor that I saw, that saw the lump, is my family doctor and who has taken care of me for over 25 years. The specialist that he referred me to is I presume, a colleague. The first visit to the specialist was costly and I have no idea what this second visit will cost but I'll go and see what he does. The thing that bothers me about him is that he didn't seem to be concerned that the reason I was referred to him was because of whatever it is that I feel in my throat, and not because of the lack of voice.
He told me then that he wanted me to have an MRI and a couple other xrays before my next visit. I asked the staff when I left that day to find out the cost first because I don't have insurance. When I heard nothing in what I thought was a timely manner, I called them. And I called again. My doctor appointment is on Tuesday and I still haven't heard from them regarding the tests, so I'm not going to ask anymore.
If I'm not satisfied with the visit this next Tuesday, I will definately find another ENT.
I'm just trying to figure out how to explain to them where it is that I feel it.
To update my problem, last Tuesday I went for a second appointment with the ENT. He was surprised that the cortisteroids didnt resolve the problem. He did the scope down my nose again and spent alot of time looking at my vocal cords. He said those looked real good, my scar tissue where my tonsils were removed looked normal, and my tongue looked normal... He stuck his finger down my throat and my normal response was to puke, which I came close to doing. He said he sees nothing else in my throat and what I am feeling is in my mind and nothing more. That made me mad... I asked for the MRI and he said he wants me to try ten days of a muscle relaxer and it should get rid of whatever I'm feeling. The prescription is for Cloraz Dipot 7.5MG 3 times a day for ten days...
If I still have this growth thing in my throat when this medicine is done, I am going to have my regular doctor order the MRI.
A couple of people have told me that this is probably caused by allergies. Is that possible?
For the last month I have felt like I have a small piece of foil moving around in my throat. Sometimes it feels like it is on the left side, sometimes the right side, sometimes in the middle of my throat and sometimes I don't feel it at all!
Every time I make a dr appointment it stops bothering me. I have one this week and I think I will keep it no matter what.
I would try to get an MRI if not gone in a week or so. I don't understand why doctors don't just do the MRI to begin with. How expensive can rolling someone into a box be? But first they want to make us run back and forth with guesswork. MAKES NO SENSE!!! If any doctors are reading, WHY DO YOU DO THAT?
I had the same thing! It felt like I had food stuck in my throat, like about the size of a pea, and I even tried to reach back and dislodge it, but there was nothing there!
I went to the doctor and she said it sounded like I had reflux. I said after having 2 children I knew what reflux felt like, and this felt nothing like it. No burning, it wasnt worse when i lay down etc. But she was quite sure that reflux was the problem and prescribed Somac, and said that if it wasnt better in a week, then she would do more tests.
Well...the somac worked after about 2-3 days! And I have never had that problem again.
I went to my doctor last week. She said that sinus drainage can cause an irritating feeling in the throat. She told me to use my nasal sprays more often and that the kind I'm on would not have any rebound problems. I using it twice a day now and so far I have not felt that irritant feeling. I'm going to give it a couple of more weeks and if I don't have that feeling again then I guess she is on the right track.
I've also had a lump in my throat since the beginning of December. My ENT told me that it was a combination of silent laryngeal reflux (this is acid reflux but silent because you don't feel heartburn - however, it supposedly makes the throat enflamed, which makes it feel like a lump), post nasal drip, and anxiety. He also looked down my throat with a scope, and only saw "a little inflamation). He did a sinus CAT scan which showed nothing.
I was put on Nexium - didn't work - I'm going for a second opinion next week - I'm beginning to think it may be anxiety related because my doctor had given me some Zanax (because I freaked out one night when I felt like I wasn't going to be able to swallow), and when I took the Zanax, it went away.
This lump has constantly been in my throat for 3 months now - and is debilitating. I've read up a lot on this, and it seems that it can most definately be associated with acid reflux - as the acid flows back up into the throat from the stomach. Unfortunately, Nexium did nothing for me - and I'm not one to taken medications liberally.
Let me know if your situation is resolved. Mine started out feeling like a little annoyance, now it feels like the size of a golf ball.
Well I took the muscle relaxer that he prescribed, but I only took it for three days instead of the ten that he prescribed. It made me feel like a zombie, and sleep all the time, and didn't do anything for the thing I felt in my throat.
I told the ENT that is was time to order an MRI which my GP did for me. The results showed something on each side of the soft palate. When I went to see the ENT after the MRI results, he used the scope in my nose and down my throat again. He said he could not see anything so he called the radiologist who read the MRI. That doctor came over within an hour and brought the actual xray which showed where the problems are. Once again with the scope in my nose and down my throat, he said he saw finally where the problems are.
I'm waiting to hear when surgery will be to have them removed and biopsied.
I have never got my voice back this whole time except one day I had about 75% of it back for a few hours. The ENT doctor says my vocal cords are looking very good now, but I still have this hoarse voice and the feeling that something is stuck in my throat and won't go down.
also, the thing in my throat doesn't feel like a lump,,,, it feels like I've eaten popcorn and alot of it has stuck in my throat. Its very ragged feeling, not smooth at all. When I take a pill, it gets stuck there and usually dissolves there, and food always gets stuck there.
I trust my GP and he saw the MRI results before the ENT did, and he said I definately need a biopsy done. I have a history of skin cancer and I've always been wierd having growths and stuff in odd places on me. *lol
I am just tired of the no voice and the feeling in my throat. Its not in my imagination, and the MRI finally proved it.
The doctors office just called, and my surgery is at 730 tomorrow morning... today I have the EKG, the bloodwork, and paying the doctors, and then going to the hospital to preregister and pay... seems odd to have to pay ahead of time...
I will check back in when its all over and done with...
