HELP! yeast/fungus infection in ear

I put some peroxide in my left ear about 6 months ago cuz it was itching (mother told me to try that) Since then i got a raging infection in my left ear went to a doctor and that went away with antibiotic treatment for about 2 weeks, (ear drops and oral antibiotics) but now it comes back...i took more antibiotics then 3 weeks later my ear pain gets worse.. so i went back to another ear doctor. GOD!! I have gone to an 2 ear specialist and they told me it was infection with inflamation in the ear canal. He gave me yet more antibiotics..which made me more worse..now the antibiotics are not working and making my ear hurt still so much...I highly suspect yeast or fungus in my ear from taking so much antibiotics..and this has been going on now for 6 months on and off...but how can i heal my ear without going to another doctor? The doctors dont do anything for me. I want to use alternative now instead of antibiotics ...please help!! I already take ALEVE for pain but this is not helping pain anymore..i dont want to mask the problem...i want to heal it ..

The ENT can send in and test for fungus if it is indeed that. Track the antibiotics so maybe you can see which one worked better than the other. Hydrogen peroxide shouldn't have been the cause of it.

Re: HELP! yeast/fungus infection in ear

Yow! That ear infection for 6 mos sounds killer. I had one that lasted about 3 and wanted to jump off a cliff.

Unfortunately, I've read that prescribing antibiotics can be problematic, cuz over time, if the infection comes back again and again, your body may develop an immunity to the antibiotic, rendering it less effective.

Ear infections are critical. If left untreated your hearing may suffer. It sounds like you're being treated by a couple ENT docs ... but are they both on the same page? They should both know the full history, what was prescribed and the result. I agree that a swab sample should be taken to determine if this is a fungal or bacterial infection.

Try NOT to poke anything in the ear no matter how bad it itches. I sure hope you get relief for this condition - which looks like it will necessitate a visit to yet a 3rd ENT doc! Don't give up.

Re: HELP! yeast/fungus infection in ear

I can really relate! After seeing X number of ENT specialists with mondo number of antibiotics, I insisted on a test for fungus. And yes, I had a major fungus. Don't want to scare you but will tell of my situation.

All summer I went to the ENT Dr....EVERY WEEK (and yes, the $25 co-pay really added up!). Each trip they would suction out the gunk from my ear and that really felt good as they were doing it. They would puff some powder - antifungal - into my ear and send me on my way just to return the following week. To make a long story shortER, the fungus eventually caused two holes in my eardrum. My hearing deteriorated, my guess 80%. That Dec. I had to have a timpanoplasty(sp?). In other words, I had to have eardrum replacement surgery. (Another story.)

Good news is, my hearing eventually has come back to near normal - I can live with this!! And, NO MORE PAIN!

I hope your problem doesn't go that far. There is no other pain like earache pain, believe me, I know. I learned that you need to be pro-active in your recovery process and insist that the Dr's get to the root of the problem and treat that, not just the symptoms. Don't know if it would have changed the outcome, but it may not have gone so long in the pain process plus the hearing loss.

In the meantime, to help reduce the pain I used a heating pad. I would also use my hair blowdryer on max heat on low speed to help with the pain. I didn't let any water into that ear (to this day, I shower and swim with earplugs).

If you have any questions or need to know any other details, just ask. I usually check the boards daily.

Hang in there! It will get better!!

Re: HELP! yeast/fungus infection in ear

go to a health food store and buy probiotics. they will help rebuild the good bacteria in your intestinal tract. the antibiotics killed a lot of it off and that is what is keeping you sick.
