Tonsillectomy Post-Op day 1

Pain is considerably worse today. Tylenol w/ Codeine barely takes edge off pain. My tongue is so swollen, and bruised, and very thick. The side of my tongue in the back has a patch of white stuff, just like the scabbing in the back of my throat where my tonsils were. Why would I have that on my tongue?
But, I am keeping up on my pain meds every 4 hours. I can't seem to sleep for more than 2 hours at a time.
Last night at about 1 am, I suddenly got very nauseous, and was going to throw up, but I literally willed myself not to, once I imagined how much THAT would have hurt! It took a few minutes, but the feeling passed.

I had jello this morning, and about 1/2 cup of yummy squash soup (lukewarm) for lunch, and a couple spoonfuls of mashed potatoes for dinner, but those hurt going down, so I stopped.

just remember to keep drinking...(preferably about 1/2 hr after your pain meds). dehydration will make you more nauseous (as will codeine unfortunately).
The pain should get better in the next couple of days... until about day5-6, so eat what you can now. Good luck!!!

Be sure to eat and drink about 1/2 hour after you take your pain medication. You might ask your doc for some throat spray pain medication. My ENT gave me "Tetracaine 1% spray" and I used it every hour. It really works. In the mean time, you might try chloraseptic spray or lozenges before you drink. Please drink every 15 minutes to keep from getting dehydrated. If your nausea continues, call your doc for some nausea medication. Hang in there it really does get better.
