Pressure / lump on right side of throat

Hi -

I've had some good experiences on other Healthboards and thought I'd ask a question here. I have a sinus infection (I think) which went misdiagnosed as acid reflux. Briefly, I have what feels like a lump or bit of food caught on the right side of my throat. I saw an ENT specialist who didn't see anything, after this had gone on for three months. He thought it was acid reflux. Three months later, after a series of colds and some chest symptoms including a lingering cough, I saw a new GP who saw redness and prescribed an antibiotic.

My chest symptoms went away after a day - wonderful. Clearly something was going on. Bronchitis comes and goes but is getting better. The lump now feels smaller and softer (I feel it when I swallow) but does not seem to be going away. I have now been on antibiotics for one of the two weeks prescribed.

I'd like to understand what is going on so I can get rid of the lump or the lump feeling. But in reading around this board, there seems to be multiple possibilities. Could some friendly board members let me know what they think?

Re: Pressure / lump on right side of throat

Hey!

This is exactly what I had.

It felt like there was a chunk in my throat when I swallowed. But the doc saw nothing.

Do you still have your tonsils? I had tonsilitis and I had white chunks randomly in my tonsils causeing this.

I went to the doctor 4 times. The first time, he saw nothing. Second time, I got diagnosed with a "throat infection" and got prescribed amoxicillin. it didn't go away. Third time, I got a stronger antibiotic. Forth time, I went to a EMT (which I recommend you to do again, maybe a different one and ask about tonsilitis or tonsil stones) and he said I should get my tonsils out.

It's been gone ever since then.

(Also, I randomly got this before because of post-nasal drip... so that can also be a factor!)

Does it feel like the base of your tongue brushes the "lump" as you swallow? Read the "Tonsil stones" thread currently on this page. That's what they feel like.

Re: Pressure / lump on right side of throat

I wondered if it might be tonsil stones......no, I don't feel it with my tongue. If I reach waaaaaaaaay over with my tongue I can just about get to the site, but don't feel anything.

I have a new GP, maybe he'll have an ENT he likes. I wasn't impressed with the last one.

I would really, really like to avoid tonsil surgery after reading the horror stories. But if it's a good idea, I'll consider it.

Re: Pressure / lump on right side of throat

i have swollen cervical lymph nodes on left side of jawline. these are deep nodes under jawline, deep into the neck. mine are in jugulodigastric region 1cm and less. these are swollen due to autoimmune thyroiditis. my ent saw nothing and did an mri of inner ears and ct of neck. which showed swollen cervical lymph nodes and nodules and cysts from auto/thyr. i feel the lump, but try not to palpitate it because it can cause extreme pain for me , ear pain and facial numbness. see a new ent and ask for ct of neck. that will show if there are any problems going on if your real concerned. lmhope

Re: Pressure / lump on right side of throat

I could feel some tonsil stone with my tongue and some i couldn't.

As well, if this is affecting your everyday life, I recommend getting your tonsils out. It was horrible for 2 weeks, but it has changed my life for the better.

I was constantly run down because of the constant infection.

Anyway, yeah. It's probably either tonsil stones or post-nasal drip.
