Coughing up a hard grey white mass.

I'm coughing up a hard grey white mass. The size of the masses average the dimenssions of a green pea. They smelled like something rotting when I smashed it between my fingers to inspect it.

When I'm lying down I will feel it emerge somehow in the back of my throat and I will cough it up. I can feel the mass in the back of my throat and will cough to get it out. Or I will bend over by the toilet, cough, and it will come out more easily. I kind of have to work it out. It feels like something is stuck in the back of my throat.

I'm not sure if I noticed blood in one of the masses the other night or if it was pasta sauce from dinner. Now my throat is just irritated from coughing. I only cough however when I feel it and am trying to cough it up.

I am 21 years old and I do not smoke or do drugs. I am not on any prescriptions. This has never happened before and has been going on for a couple weeks now.

Re: Coughing up a hard grey white mass.

don't worry, they're tonsil stones

Tonsil Stones (tonsilloliths) are caused by an accumulation of sulfur-producing bacteria and debris that become lodged in the tonsils. This debris (which can include mucous from post nasal drip) putrifies in the back of your throat, and collects in the tonsil crypts (small divots or pockets which appear on the surface of the tonsils).

What a relief, I thought it may be more serious. Thank you for the post.

no problem - there are a few threads on here about them, you could do a search and see what other people have said about them.
I know some people say they dig them out with a q-tip and others use a water pic.

Hi there,
I had the same problem, they are a worry until you know what they are. You may put up with it and deal with it yourself. I did for quite a few years but the ENT specialist said he could wip my tonsils out and then the problem would be gone. Think carefully about this and read up on adult tonsillectomy so you know what it expect. There are probably alternatives, we do not have water picks in the UK so I didn't ever use one. The blood though could be sign of a low grade infection so if you feel under the weather too then you ought to seek a professional opinion from and ENT specialist to put your mind at rest. Take care and remember it really is a very common problem you are not alone with it by any means!

Re: Coughing up a hard grey white mass.

Thanks again for all your help guys. I think the first thing I might try is some over the couter rinse or solution of some kind that you gargle. I'll see how that works first.

Right now I feel like there are some more forming or working their way out. Coughing or clearing your throat doesnt help (just irritates the throat). I really need to get some rinse or something tomorrow.

I'm really annoyed with these things right now, because I can feel it there. When I do cough one up though it's such a relief.

As far as manually clearing them out; I wouldn't even know really where to scrape. I'll leave that to a doctor if it comes down to it; I know I'll make it worse somehow by doing it myself.

Anyway surgery seems excessive. I'll just have to live with it if I cant get rid of it by other means. I never had this before and now it just comes out of no where, but thats how all ailments are I guess.
