Unhappy Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

I woke up on September 26th, 2006 with my neck glands swollen and hard. I went to the doctor’s on October 5th and got tested for mono and strep twice…which all came back negative. I had a CBC done and the white blood count was slightly elevated.
I have had constant fatigue ever since I’ve had these swollen and hard neck glands. No matter how much sleep I get I am always tired, if not exhausted. My neck glands periodically are more swollen at times and are always hard. My throat is NOT sore and I do not have a cough. I feel feverish all the time, like I will be having a hot flash (start sweating suddenly out of nowhere) and the next minute I will be having cold chills. I don’t have a fever though, the first course of antibiotics got rid of that. The doctor has given me two full courses of antibiotics in October. They put me on Prednisone for a week or so and it only brought down the swelling in my neck temporarily. I feel like crap everyday and it seems as the days go by, it’s getting worse. On November 10th I came down with what I believe was a sinus cold. I believe I caught it from my friends I hang out with on a daily basis because my immune system is weakened by the condition I have. I was blowing out greenish-yellowish mucus out of my nose for about a week. I took Mucinex and I believe the cold is over since I am not blowing out any colored mucus anymore but I still have some mucus caught in the back of my throat. When the doctor looked down my throat he said my tonsils and my neck glands are swollen. He said my lymph nodes are “golf ball size.” And he said I have pus packets in my throat on my glands and tonsils. The doctor said if it was tonsillitis, the antibiotics would have taken care of that. I got a second CBC done in November and it came back normal. They did a sedimentation test in November and it also came back normal. For the past couple of days, I have had chest pain on the left side, which lasts from 30 seconds to a minute, and it hurts when I take a deep breath only while having that chest pain. I have occasional dizziness and frequent headaches. I have trouble with my memory and I have been getting easily confused lately. For example, I don’t even remember if I had a fever when I first had my swollen neck glands back in September, but my mom says I did have a fever for the first week. I also have ringing in my ears and I had a severe nosebleed three days ago that lasted a good ten minutes, and I have never had nosebleeds. I had unexplained weight gain (ten pounds in 6 weeks). Now I have a loss of appetite and have lost ten pounds in 2 weeks. Today on Thanksgiving, I forced myself to eat and I had extremely painful gas and all the food I ate today went right through me, I had diarrhea. The last time I went to the doctor’s, he told me he thought it was a low grade bacterial infection(or viral, I don’t exactly remember) and it should go away in 6 to 8 weeks. I have already had it for over 8 weeks now. But I read online that you don’t have a viral or bacterial infection unless you have a fever. So I have no idea what I have and I don’t have any insurance so funds are very limited. Luckily I have my family to help me out. I am a 21 year old white female. Life is so difficult being sooo tired all of the time and feeling sick (malaise). Anyone have any ideas of what I could possibly have or should get tested for?

Re: Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

Did you get tested for Lyme Disease? Are you having any joint or muscle pain? Is your neck stiff? Have had some of the same symptoms as you and I'm currently being tested for Lyme.

Yes my neck is stiff but I think it is from stress. What symptoms do you have? I also have had pale gums.

Sometimes, that condition is caused by peridontal disease. The dentist should have a good look at you to see if you have any infections at the roots of your teeth. I know that dentistry is even harder to come by than medical help. But most dental infection is not treatable by the same antibiotics that other things are. Also. it will cause the same symptoms as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, mono, or Cat Scratch fever.

Re: Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

I just went to the dentist and I think I am all set. I have no pain or discomfort in my mouth or teeth. I tested negative for lyme disease also.
Yesterday new lymph nodes popped up under my jawline and underneath the ones on the sides of my neck. What is going on????????? Im kinda getting scared. I was tested in February for all STD's including HIV and it all came back negative but I have had new partners since those tests were done. Is HIV possible? The only way I would get it would be from unprotected sex.....I never have had anal sex and I never use needles.
I was having diarrhea, but as long as I eat cheese with my food, my stools are still loose, almost like diarrhea but it keeps the food from going right through me and having diarrhea. My temp is my normal at 97.6 degrees. My appetite has come back, I think i lost it because of stress. Can ANYONE HELP ME??

Re: Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

1) Go to your GP get tested for STD's.
2) Go to an allergist/immunologist. There are rare occasions where your immune system gets stuck in over drive and the only way to fix it is to reboot the system with a short term, high dose steriodal regime. I had the swollen glands (with no good reason, other than a sinus infection lingering for 4 months) in my neck, throat, behind the ears, all the way down to under my arms. The CBC's came back normal, the physical showed that it was like slow onset anephlactic(sp?) shock taking days versus minutes. Five days of steriods from my A/I and I was feeling better than I had been in months.

Sincerely,
MG

Thank you for your information. I am seeing an Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist as soon as I can get an appointment and we'll go from there. I would appreciate any and all advice from anyone else on here and I will keep you guys updated on the situation! I do wanna get tested for all STD's including HIV asap but I need to wait until I have money for that.

Re: Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

Hello,
I saw your reply in my thread, thanks!

I read through your posts in here. I hear ya and the need you have to get an answer about what is going on! It S**Ks not to know and not to get better. I know your appointment is on 14th, I would say make sure to write til then everyday how you are feeling, any symptoms, so when you finally see the specialist, you don't leave out any detail about what is going on. Hopefully they are gonna find an answer to your situation hon!, Hang in there, and if you feel you can't wait 'til then because it is only going worse, please go to the ER and don't leave til they help you out!

In the mean time, I know all these symptoms can be scary but please don't hang on to the thought you might be dying!!! Between you and me, you don't know that right now and you won't know til they find out what is going on... might be a better idea to hang on the thought that it might be something very treatable that is gonna get better as soon as they find out and give you the right treatment!

I am stressed out from waiting too, from symptoms annoying me and making days harder than I wish they were, but we don't want to make ourselves sicker by worrying too much, do we!?!?

Stay positive, get as much rest as you can, try to eat healthy, stay hydrated, and take care of yourself alright!!! Don'T do more than your body can take!

I'll keep ya in my thoughts and hope you feel better real soon!

Tekkymrc

Re: Hard Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue

Thank you for caring! I dont know if I told everyone but my lyme disease test came back NEGATIVE. Im waiting on the results of my HIV test which should be back within the next week. Im going to the EArs, NOse and Throat specialist on december 14th at 1pm! Lately Ive been craving salt and at the same time, been really thirsty all the time. I haven't been that hungry at all lately...only when my stomach really hurts and I know it wants food but I am not hungry...no appetite really. Even though the past two days I intentially tried to eat a lot of food and I still lost weight(because Ive been losing weight too fast for no reason other than loss of appetite ever since I had diarrhea on Thanksgiving). Im going to post an edited version of my story on here since I cant delete this post! So bear with me, maybe I can get some answers this way! Lets Hope So!!!!! Take CAre EVeryone

Exclamation Rubbery Swollen Neck Glands And Fatigue For Over 10 Weeks!

Hello everyone, I want to personally thank you for taking the time to read my post because I am at my wit's end with figuring out what the heck I have. The sooner I find out the sooner I can treat it and get better! I know worrying about it and getting stressed out will only make my condition worse and I am aware of that!
So here's my story.......I woke up on September 26th with huge swollen painful neck glands, achy all over and a fever. My first thought was strep throat since my friends had it a few weeks before. I went to the doctors on Oct. 5th and they gave me antibiotics. Finished them and went back to the doctors still not feeling better but the fever and aches were gone. They gave me a second course of stronger antibiotics, didn't work. Then they gave me Prednisone for about 10 days to reduce the swelling, which it did but as soon as I came off of it, they swelled right back up, bigger this time! Nov 1st-Nov 10th Took Claritin from doctor 5mg/day-small blue pill(he thought it might be allergies). Nov. 10th: Started my period and I felt like I was coming down with a sinus cold because I felt like my head was floating like a balloon and I could feel my sinuses filling up. I believed I caught this from my boyfriend and also because my immune system was weakened from fighting off whatever I have been fighting off for 10 weeks now! I was blowing out yellowish-green colored mucus from my nose for a few days but then finished the cold off with healthy clear mucus! It is December 7th now and I sometimes get mucus in the back of my throat but I think some of the mucus got caught in my swollen neck/throat glands while I was sick and is still slowly draining out when I sneeze or something like onions/jalepenos opens up my sinuses.(When you look down my throat you can see how swollen it is...the doctor said it looks like golf balls.) Some days I can feel my neck glands changing size or at least getting ready to....when they grow they are painful and very tender. When they shrink it's a relief and I seem to have a little more energy too!
My CBC was normal. My sedementation test was normal. I tested negative for mono, strep, anemia and lyme disease. Since my cold went away, I've been having dizziness, forgetfullness, short term memory loss, poor concentration, bloating/gas/digestion problems, severe sudden back pain(different places) that comes and goes, always thirsty, always tired, weak and malaise feeling, cold then hot/feverish (my temp is actually low), cold sweats and cold chills and hot flashes, ringing in my ears few times per day. I gained 10 lbs. the first month I was sick and now I have lost over 10 lbs. and have a poor appetite.
I had a frightening episode the other day where my heart started beating faster or I had shortness of breath while I was sitting on a couch doing nothing and then both of my hands went numb and tingly. Then my hands came back to normal feeling and both of my feet went numb and tingly. This happened twice in a row and then I had bad cold chills. I had chest pain in my left side of my chest (I have been getting this for a few weeks now) for about 10 seconds and dizziness before I had the numb hands and feet.
So I have an appointment with an Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist on December 14th at 1pm....CANNOT WAIT THAT LONG AHHHHH this is driving me crazy not knowing what is going on with me and the possibility of it being serious! IF it turns out serious I wanna catch this as early as possible so I can treat it ASAP and hopefully cure it! I am waiting on my HIV Test to come back but I don't think I have HIV, although it is a sad possiblity. But I would really really really LOVE and appreciate any and all advice/thoughts/comments/etc. from anybody willing to try to help me figure this out!
Worried and Waiting..............
