Lump behind ear..

Thought this might be the most appropriate place to post this..

About 2 weeks ago I noticed a lump behind my ear just above the lobe and on the Mastoid bone (below the normal bump on the base of the head). And yes its visible, sticking out. The things that have me very worried are; no pain, feels very hard and feels fixed in place : (

It is not discolored yet or anything and seems to have stayed the same size so far. I made a doc appt.. but im still really scared what I may find out. I have had cysts/pimples directly behind my ear in the crease before, rather large painful ones but those were obvious as to what they were and went away. However this one is different..

Any thoughts or ideas? thanks

Lymph node. Plain an simple. Mine would swell back there all the time.. every time I had an allergic response, head cold, sinus infection, ear infection, or combination of the above. On occasion a scratch or inflammed skin infection near that region can cause the same effect. Going to the MD is the best thing to do.. they can figure out what is triggering it.

Is it just on one side or both? If it is both I would bet you have an internal infection or allergic response aggrevating them.. if it is only one it could be a one-sided ear infection or external aggrevating site on that side of you head.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: Lump behind ear..

Its just on the one side.

He put me on anti-biotics for a week and then I go back, he suspects infection and my outer ear looks red to him.

Curious, when yours did this was it sticking out so you could see it? and was it hard, fixed, colorless and without pain for the most part?

thanks!

cujo25,

Yes it would stick out as a hard lump.. discoloration nothing other than skin tone.. fixed in place, not movable. Pain? Humm.. well that depended on how big the lymph node got and whether it was due to an internal ear infection or not. In general the lymph nodes did not hurt excessively but would ache. Normally, there was enough pain elsewhere for the lymph node pain to be negligible to me.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: Lump behind ear..

I had one as well behind my ear lobe on top of the bone where you described. It was there for several months. Visible, painless, firm, slightly smaller than a pea. Went to the Dermatologist who cut it out and had it biopsied. Turned out to be a "reactive lymph node". Not sure what that meant other than the obvious - a lymph node reacting to something. Anyway, Dr said not an issue. If yours persists, you should have it biopsied to be safe.

Re: Lump behind ear..

Thanks both of you

Here is a pic I found actually, mine is just like the one on the left...maybe a bit smaller though

I could see it be the result of something dental, I have a capped molar that acts up, gets painful etc... but who knows. Doc thursday again.

Re: Lump behind ear..

Hi

You should go to a specialist and have it biopsied to be sure it is not any type of Lymphoma or Leukemia. Swollen lymph nodes can just be a sign of fighting infection but like in my brother in law's case.....Leukemia. Don't wait. Go and have it checked soon.
