rattling sensation in ear

I have a problem with my left ear that I hope you could provide some guidance on: At certain frequencies and intensities of sounds (and
this varies from day to day) I feel a sensation of physical rattling, in my ear. This has been happening on and off for the past 5 years (I'm 26). I saw an audiologist probably 4 years ago when it first bothered me and he said he didn't know what was causing it, and otherwise the ears were diagnosed as normal. Lately the problem has been getting much worse - sometimes I experience the rattling even when I speak loud enough; pubs or anywhere with moderate music set it off. Any ideas? It is particularly set off by high pitched noises, like kitchen utensils clinking. I dont think it's tinnitus, as my ringing is only due to real external sources of noise.

Thanks for any guidance or advice.

Matt

Re: rattling sensation in ear

matt this is a muscle spasm in the middle ear, its the stapedial muscles and or the tensor tympani, you can look those up as well as middle ear myclonus.
mine was so bad i had the tendond severed and this helped a ton!

That is very informative, thank you for your reply!

Did you go to an ear specialist directly to solve this? I have had trouble getting this diagnosed in the past - two failed attempts with family doctor and audiologist. I could live with it before, but it's so bad these days that I need to get it fixed if possible.

Re: rattling sensation in ear

Lib,
I live in Toronto, Canada, which is about a 2 hour drive from Buffalo. Any knowledge about good neurotologists in the area? Also if you could let me know where and who finally helped you, that would be great.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: rattling sensation in ear

Lib,
I could go to Richmond, but I should probably exhaust options near me before going that far.
