Post Nasal Drip Really Affecting My Life. Please Help.

I know this is a very long post but I would be very grateful if you could read it and provide me some help.

I have been suffering from post nasal drip for about 4 months now and it is really effecting all aspects of my life. Im constantly depressed because I have become anti social because I know this effects my breath. I am constantly hacking up white thick mucus and I cough alot at night when I sleep. I can taste it constantly and my tongue is quite furry and has a white coating on it. I clean it often but it returns in about 5 minutes. I used to be a very socially active and happy person but now I avoid seeing friends and I am really uncomfortable seeing my boyfiend because I know he can smell/taste my bad breath. I think this all started when I got a mild sinus infection which had no symptoms except really bad tasting post nasal drip. I was given amoxil and it went away within 2-3 days but it came back and Ive had it since then. Ive been put on about 6 different antibiotics since amoxil, such as zinnat, eryc, amoxil (again)resprim forte and now my ENT doesnt think i have an infection anymore but i am on rulide and have to stay on it for 3 months for its anti inflammitory effects but no improvemnt so far.

I ve tried nasonex for 2 months, no help and now on beconase but with no improvement. I have no other symptoms, no runny nose, no itchy nose nothing except this PND. I also use nielmed sinus rinse and have seen 3 ENT and about 7 different doctors. I have been blood tested for allergies and all came back negative but i am currently waiting to see an allergy specialist to get a more extensive result, though I doubt I am allergic to anything. I have never had any allergies or sinus problems before this. I am currently seeing a naturopath (about 2 months) but with no improvent. Can anyone help me? I am getting to a point where I am sick of my life. Please help. I dont think i can live like this for much longer.

I wonder if you could actually have a bit of yeast (also known as Thrush) contributing to your symptoms. You have several risk factors for its growth including recent and multiple antibiotic therapies and nasal steroid use plus you describe a furry, white coating on your tongue. You might want to ask your doctor about the possibility.

Laenini, thanks for your reply. I have considered that possibility and have asked my ENT if I have a mild fungal infection but he doesnt think so. But i may visit another dr to get a fungal treatment to see if i respond to it...at this stage im willing to try anything.

Re: Post Nasal Drip Really Affecting My Life. Please Help.

Hi, I've been having a similar problem for just over two years now. In the beginning I was given anti-biotics (amoxil and augmentim), anti-histamines and nasal sprays with no effect and then was recommended to an ENT who did bad things to me. He tried a lot of old school methods which were extremely unpleasant such as the membrane reduction and flushing my sinuses out. This was all in the first six months and since then I've just been living with it. I was finding it too depressing to seek any more treatment with no improvements.

I did have a CT scan early on which concluded that I had no sinus issues (and I've never even remotely had a sinus problem before) but its felt like the problem has always been treated as a sinus issue which I don't think it is - but I've no medical specialist. I just came back from overseas and I was living in some cold climates and the problem had become worse which is why today I went back to a doctor to get recommended to another ENT. the appointment is not till next month.

Has anyone had any success in treatment? please post or may know someone that can help... Its been affecting every aspect of my life, physically, emotionally. Its becoming very hard to deal with.

I had the same problem and the ENT recommend trying Prilosec, he said that the lump in my throat was due to silent GURD. I tried it and within 14 days it was gone, it was really affecting my job with constantly having to clear my throat.

Has anyone else been successful with treatment? I don't think mine is reflux, I was treated for that for months first. I think mine is sinus related, I tested postive for allergies. I am takin a nasal steriod but I am not any better at all.

Is the nasal steroid spray the only thing you're taking for allergies? If you believe that allergies are part of the problem you should also be taking an antihistamine daily - the spray won't stop the post nasal drip, it will only help minimize inflammation. Try taking Loratadine (generic Claritin) or Zyrtec - both of which are available over-the-counter - every morning for a couple of weeks to see if that helps - it should help with PND if it's allergy related.

Re: Post Nasal Drip Really Affecting My Life. Please Help.

gcsmithjr,

I took your advice and I am now taking a zyrtec. Its only been a few days (I started on Friday) but I see the change, I haven't had the wonderful lump feeling in my thraot for the past few days. The smell is still pretty bad but I notice an inprovement now when I do the salins rinse, before I didn't notice an improvement no matter what I did. I have a follow-up appointment with my doctor on March 14th so I hope to be so much better by then. The congestion is gone, the headaches have improved and my nose doesn't seem to run as much as it had in the past as well. I really think the nasal sterios and the antihisatamine are the key together.

I just hope I am headed toward a smellfree and sinus control future!

Thanks.
