Loss of hearing and ringing in right ear

I had an ongoing sinus problem with sore throat and constant clearing of the throat for a week so i went to the dr and got antibiotics. Well that sunday I started on the medz I blew my nose and my right ear popped and clogged. It hurt all day. Now it's been 7 days and no pain, but ear is still clogged and constant ringing. Nothing seems to get rid of it. Not sure if I could have ruptured my ear drum or what. But I can't stand it now. Any clue if this is normal with a sinus infection?

Re: Loss of hearing and ringing in right ear

You very well could have ruptured you eardrum. Your sinuses are quite close to that area. My guess is that if you have hearing loss, you have fluid behind the eardrum. I had that once and the doctor said to take Dimetapp for a month. It finally cleared, but I do still have some hearing loss in that ear. Talk to your doctor - if meds don't clear it up, you may have to have a tube inserted in your ear to drain it.

Good Luck, Boo63

I'm guessing it would have hurt if you ruptured your eardrum by blowing your nose (although it's possible), but for sure the next thing to do would be to see an ENT or Otologist, who can tell if the eardrum is OK, if you've got an ear infection, or something else.

Things to try in the meantime: Sometime you can 'unpop' (deflate) your ear by pinching your nose and swallowing several times. Our pediatrician used to tell us to get nose drops into the eustachian tube by lying on a bed with the head hanging over the edge, and then put the drops in.
