I have had chronic 24 hour throat constriction for five years now. I have had many tests for allergies, gerd, lpr, etc... It is undiagnosed. THe constriction has now spread to my sinuses and I have a dry throat. Any suggestions?
I have that feeling as well - it has been about a year now. I think it goes hand in hand with all of my other symptoms, and I have decided that this closed throat or lump in throat is Globus Hystericus due to stress, clenching me teeth, tightening up my muscles and throat ect, and of course it's worse now that I have this weird inner ear thing that makes me dizzy and nauseated.
Globus Hystericus (lump in the throat)
Globus is the term given to the sensation of a lump in the throat causing difficulty with swallowing when there is no physical cause. One can't, of course, know there is no physical cause unless it's been excluded.
Globus hystericus is a Freudian diagnosis. It is used today to describe far more than neurosis. Those that follow a URI are due to patient awareness of their epiglottis and symptoms dissipate after examination to rule out cancer. Explanation is all that is required. Many describe this as a lump in the throat.
It does not feel like a lump in the throat, though. It is constriction making it hard to breathe. It has also spread to my sinuses, too. They just all feel kind of swollen. And yes, when the doctors have not been able to find a physical cause they have attributed it to my nerves and one even said that now that I know I don't have a problem I will be all right. But I have this 24 hours a day. I have never been much to go to doctors unless I needed something and now that I do, it seems they can not help.
If you ever figure it out what it is, let me know. :-)
My docs said I was crazy, it is stress, etc.
Well finally I convinced one specialist to send me for a CT scan of
my sinuses. He found structural abnormalities which require surgery to correct. That is causing my congestion problems.
The throat constriction comes and goes, better on some days than others. When I have it, its pretty bad. The ENTS say my larynx is slightly inflamed and red probably as a result of acid reflux. I do know one thing, I changed my diet a lot, cut out soft drinks, coffee, most chocolates, fried foods, etc. It does make a difference.
I also ended up with a dry mouth and throat. It could be breathing through your mouth when sleeping that causes it but my wife says I rarely snore and sleep with my mouth closed. I do wake up a couple times during the night, mainly cause of the nasal congestion and also to sip some water.
For the sinuses you can ask your doc for some steroid nasal sprays see if it helps. I'll prob book another gastroscopy see whats going on in there lately.
I think you are the first person in five years that seems to have very similar symptoms to mine. I do not feel mine is stress related like the doctors attribute it to either! Thank you for your adviceand please let me know if you learn anything new and I will do the same. We are going on vacation but I will try to check this site again when we return.
