I'm a 29 yr old male. For about three weeks now I have awoken to a humming or vibration in my left ear. This is not a "tone" but more like a very low frequency motorized hum. When I first woke with it I thought someone was running a generator outside. Sometimes it "pulses" on and off. It is not painful but irritating. I am afraid of this. Can somebody help me to sort out this problem..
It sounds similar to something I have recently started suffering with, but mine is more like a thumping noise. Sometimes the vibrations are that bad that as stoopid as it sounds I ask my boyfriend to put his ear to mine to see if he can hear it, but like you say it pulses different tones. When it first started i went to my GP and it turned out that I had a perferated ear drum, although the strange thing was that I had no pain! My eardrum has since healed apparently, although I didn't trust the GP that i saw this time because he shoved that ear thing in my ear so far that I thought if it was healed its not now! The thumping stopped for a short period but it has now come back with avengence.
It is worth you going to your GP just to make sure that your ear drum is not perferated, although there's not much they can do!
I'm seriously thinking of demanding to be referred to a Otologist (ear specialist) because the is just so frustrating especially when im trying to sleep!
Im 31 and in the afternoon and at night when its quiet, I notice a motorized humming sound that goes on for about 5 seconds or so and then off. Sometimes it changes pitch. I'm doing some reasearch on the efffects of cell phones and cell towers in my area.

I have the identical thing. For a long time I thought someone idyling a motor outside. It is only in my left ear. My GP said I need to go to a ENT (Ears, Nose, Throat Dr.) I just haven't done it yet because I just had shoulder surgery. Now I have to tackle the ear problem because sometimes it keeps me awake.
mine started when i was cooking pancakes for breakfast 3 days ago, it came on like a thump thump, in my left ear once every couple seconds. then it went faster after about 4 hours, then by about 8pm it started turning into a flutter like mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm.
when i **** my jaw to the right or open my mouth it stops. if i put foam earplugs in, it stops.
i sleep with earplugs in and it worked till this morning when i was awakened by the sound of a tiny hotrod in my ear, i took the earplug out and it stopped for a few hours.
i want to know what causes this more than what i can do to fix it.
stress, food allergy, maybe a congestion problem... my nose was broken 2 years ago and i cant breathe out of the left side of IT either.
