Angry Grr, Tinnitus!

I have always had some tinnitus. I was born with it. Same as my poor mother. But it was low enough that I could go on with my day and not even notice it, and not have any trouble falling asleep. But 1 month ago (almost to the day), I got a bad infection of my ears (first one, then the other). As it usually does when im sick, the tinnitus spiked in volume, making sleep more difficult. Well now the infection has been gone for 2 1/2 weeks and the tinnitus is STILL loud. Anyone with Tinnitus had such a problem? Do you think it will fade back down or is this my new volume? And why wouldn't it go back down, as it did so many times before?

*sigh* sorry throw this at everyone...its starting to drive me insane. ..or rather, MORE insane.
