Hi all,

Id like to start off saying. Im glad to have found this board. I have read a few of your posts and have helped me understand the process of surgery. Along with similar problems I share with you guys.

Ive had bouts of tonsilitis (or however you spell it) for years now. Im 22. After seeing an ENT yesterday (june 20th) He told me I need my chronically inflammed tonsils taken out. They are red and have those oh so wonderfull white spots all over. He told me it would be time to have my adenoids pulled out as well. Which makes sense.

So, he scheduled me for removal at my local Hospital less than a week later! Which I found to be great. June 25 6:10am to be exact.
He is a fairly new specialist out of residency. (doing research online) But he seems to be confident and told me what I should feel when I have them removed. What will be given for pain after surgery, possible bleeding, etc. Which Im glad to have been told without asking. As most doctors I see, dont say anything unless I ask them. Anyways im rambling on about stupid stuff now.. lol

So It's Thursday night. Im going in on Monday morning. And Im somewhat scared being my first operation and all.. Im more scared about the pain that comes along with adult removal. I had my wisdom tooth taken out 2 months ago & I was a big sissy and that extraction site hurt like a B**CH for almost 3 weeks. SO hopefully This wont be much more painfull.

Is there anything I should be aware of before I come home after surgery? Im Going to bring my la-z-boy up from my theather room into the main living room, so my siblings can take care of me. I heard sleeping laying up is good. So the chair will help out. What foods should I avoid eating? (obviously no chips or anything hard) But Hot soup sounds like it might hurt the throat as well? Maybe cold cold water and slurpies or something?

Im going to be recovering during the 4th of July Week. And I have canceled my plans and staying home. Based on your guys experience with recovery. Do you think I would be able to be outside with my family and neighbors enjoying the weekend? (stupid questions i know.. But it's on my mind..)

Any OTC medicines i should get beforehand? Humidifiers I heard are great. But i dont think I can afford it this month.

Last question I can think of right now. What is the best medication to treat your pain from your guys experience? Im sure they will give me some liquid form of something. But im a big sissy as I said before to pain. I had to take percocet for almost a month after one wisdom tooth being extracted..

Any help. Advice, comforting words would be appreciated. Im going to try and check in and update everyone as much as possible after Surgery.

Hey - I am 22 years old as well and had mine removed about a month and half ago. (and trust them when they say it's different from kids, i knew a 3 year old who had it done at the same time and was perfectly fine after only a few day).To answer a few of your questions....
Medicine - i was originally given demerol (in pill form) for the pain. I think because tylenol usually did not help me. Well with the lack of eating and such - i started vomiting the first 2 nights. My doc then switched me to liquid tylenol3 with hydrocodeine. This I recommend because I could feel a complete relief from the pain after taking it. I usually had to wait about an hour after a dosage to be able to eat.
Time of Recovery - I would guess there is a good possibility you could enjoy the 4th of July weekend. I had a rough start and then it got worse toward the middle, but by day 10 I was feeling 100% better eating all sorts of new foods! It will depend on you personally (and don't worry - I was a wimp about the wisdom teeth too!)
Foods - I stayed on a liquid diet for about a week.....(with eggsa and a few cheese enchilada's lol). Liquids being - slushies, sno-cones, popscicles, warm tea, etc. Once again - if you feel like eating - I'd recommend it. I started eating and then dropped back into my bad days (when the scabs were coming off) and didn't eat or drink for 2 days straight. But then once the scabs were gone - that when I felt so much better.

Another thing - ice packs are wonderful for the pain and soreness. I used mine for 2 weeks everyday when I hurt. Also, you may experience ear pain and a warm heating pad and ear drops helped me.

About 4 years ago I had my upper jaw broke and then replaced and it was not as bad as the immediate pain i felt as the anesthesia/original pain meds from the hospital wore off for my tonsillectomy.....but if you keep your meds coming at every 4 hours, it shouldn't be bad. These posts had me a little worried too after the fact, but I had a good recovery compared to some (I had my ups and downs) but nothing compared to those who had to be cauterized due to bleeding.

Hey Payneth, I'm 22 and getting mine taken out on the 26th! Maybe we can be pain buddies and post our recoveries? Anyways, these are some things people who had theirs removed have told me. First, no icecream the first week, they told me it will be painful to swallow and because its so thick it could coat your tonsils and create another unpleasant experience. They told me to drink alot of water and that cold things feel good for the first week and then switch to warm. So who knows we'll see what happens next week!!

I had my T&A removed this morning. They said It went well besides excessive bleeding or something. The nurse said that the surgeon had to take out more than expected or something along those lines.. Oh well..

My post op nurse sucked.. He called me Dan. When my name clearly said Justin. He was an old guy.. He had a hard time walking around, let alone take care of me.. Which I dont think is safe.

My throat hurts like a B**TCH. My roxicodone isn't working as well as i would like. I have lidocane the dr gave me. Amoxicilin, prednasone?, something for constipation if I have it. But yeah.

Im all drugged up. So sorry for the bad grammar and whatnot.

I dont remember a damn thing about surgery. Just going to bed, and waking up 2 hours later. (yes it took about 2 hrs since the complications)

I really appreciate the kind words ladies. Hayley219 Thank you for taking your time to write all that. I just got around to reading in just now.

It hasnt been that bad. The swallowing is the absolute worst part. But besides that. Im somewhat okay right now since the dr gave me 1000ml of roxicodone.

Well I dont know what else to say as of right now. I haven't ate since 11pm last night. And, im not sure what to eat. I've searched for soft foods on ****** to eat. But, nothing really sounds good. The soft foods that sound good Are at the store. lol Since im living with my grandma and Im usually the one to cook her dinner, go shopping for food, etc. (shes getting too old) Im stuck with what is here.

Anyone home-made suggestions besdies jello?

Hi I just got my tonsils taken out today and was wondering if anyone had any cuts in their mouth or outside around their lip from the breathing tube.

I don't feel too bad as I contribute my LIQUID Tylenol with Codeine. I'm not taking the full dose as I sip just a little every hour or so with Water, Ice Punch-Gatorade and Jello. Let it slide down my throat, does the trick. I don't get the nausea or the jitters since I keep it isolated for the throat pain. My Dr. initially tried to give me the pills and I SAID "NO, NO NO". Thanks to all these wonderful message boards I had the 411 on the skinny. I think they try to give you the pills as to not encourage over medication.

Any interesting food suggestions are welcomed!

My dr suggested liqud medication. So Im not sure why your dr wanted to give you pills instead.

411 on the skinny?? What are you saying..
