Thyroid Problem that's been bothering me

Hi, I've been struggling to find out what is causing all the pain in my thyroid region.

For about a year and a half, I kept on having problems with my throat ranging from coughing out phlegm violently, sneezing viscous yellow fluid, feeling pains at the back of my throat and even a few times in the past feeling pains near my upper chest areas. When I first saw a doctor on my throat problem, he diagnosed the problem as allergies and prescribed clariton. That wasn't the problem however and on my second visit he gave me Nasonex, antihistamines and even a cough syrup that can put me to sleep. At one point, I took 6-7 meds a day and I was a leading a very miserable life. When all the drugs didn't worked, my doctor guessed I had strep throat since I also showed signs of an itchy, dry throat. I had failed the initial blood tests for step throat a few months earlier but my doctor didn't know what was causing my problem and so gave me antibiotics twice which helped a little. The problem persisted and I consulted a specialist on thyroid problems however I had an impression that he was also guessing. He diagnosed my problem to be acid reflux even though I was still coughing out yellow phlegm. I had a very strict diet but still nothing worked. I don't have any of the problems like before but the dry pain won't go away.

Fortunately, I don't cough out phelgm anymore but the dry pain still persists. Can this be a virus infecting my throat? Or could these symptons, past and present manifest another condition?

I'm 18 now and I don't want this to haunt me later on in college. I won't have socialized healthcare coverage anymore and I'm worried that I'm running out of options.

Re: Thyroid Problem that's been bothering me

Hi RogerThat,
I'd seek another opinion if I were you, from another doctor (have you seen an ENT?). If they think you have a thyroid problem, you should get a referral to an endicronologist. I have Grave's Disease (overactive thyroid) and the treatment worked like a dream and quickly too. I never had phlegm problems though. But do ask for a referral to another specialist for a second opinion. Did they give you a thyroid uptake test to see if you have a goiter? You'll feel the weight of the world come off your shoulders when you know how to treat your problem.
