EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

sUPPOSEDLY I have eustachian tube dysfunction (etd-) I have had all kinds of tests- balance tests, - etc- now they want me to have an MRI- which is Thursday- I am really scared- but the ear dr. says- have to see what is going on- doesn't believe it is from allergies, or the airplane flights I took ( 5 of them within a 2 wk span- my allergist disagrees- it is so confusing. It is true- when It happens- pressure- lightheadness, clogged ears - it is scary and anxiety provoking- I feel out of it when it happens- and once I got a dizzy thing - when I was sitting up as a passengar while driving- the rest seem to occurr after I get out of a moving vehickle- or train- but this happens mainly MAy- Oct- never in the winter- oh yes- If I fly one time in the winter- I might feel clogged- but not like this.
Anyone out there can help me- or has had this????

I was wondering if you grind your teeth? Have you been evaluated for TMJ?
TMJ can cause ear pressure and vertigo.

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

My symptoms in the past and of late are almost identical to yours. It is hard to tell which comes first - the ear thing or the anxiety. Then, they seem to perpetuate one another. I am starting to think it is a combination of allergy, stress, humidity, and who knows what else. I am definitely in the same May-October pattern as you. I am finally realizing why I don't like the summer - I don't feel like myself.

I can control it somewhat by staying calm, exercising, eating well, etc. I find that if I have a time of extreme stress in the wrong month, though, everything can get way out of whack. There is also definitely motion (car rides, movies, etc.) and sometimes even sound involved in wreaking havoc, but only when the conditions are right. I had a good five year stretch where such things didn't bother me so much. Hopefully, fall will be just around the corner and we can get back on track.

Thanks so much for getting back- have you been diagnosed with what????
It feels like my summer is going to be wiped out- canceled a 6 hr trip to maine- now supposed to go on a driving trip to Vermont in 3 wks. I am a health food nut, acitve,,exercise, work( not so much in summer-thanks god) - well at least the mri will see if there is anything serious. My husband is a Dr. and he and my ent both say- if the MRI is clear- than it is anxiety, or maybe a workup w/ neurologist- they say it isn't allergy , food, atmoshperic changes- but I feel better with what you have shared w/ me- frankly- I don't even know how I am going to go on the 30 min ride to the hospital for the mri- I will try some meditation breathing-
tonight I have a concert that we are going to attempt to go to- It is an hour's drive- and I just hope once I am there I will not feel out of it, or nauseous- have had these tickets for months- and I would hate to not even try to g0- I am going to go and try and stay calm. ]
Thanks so very much for sharing w/ me- I guess it really does help to hear that maybe other people might be dealing w/ similar issues and how they do cope.
best,
Red

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

I have that clogged feeling in my ears a lot. It is the same feeling as when your flying and your ears are popping to regulate the pressure but for me, they just pop and reclog, It makes me feel very dizzy and off-centered. I grind my teeth and my dentist told me that it is TMJ. I wear a night-guard but I haven't notice a change yet. I also had a MRI of my brain just to be sure!

So Donna, what are you doing for it/ I feel like if they don't find something on the MRI - and depending what a neruologist says- what can you do? other than my vrt exercises which I do faithfully, - trying to stay calm- maybe I should just start praying alot.

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

Unfortunately, I have resorted to taking a 1/2 low-dose zanax to help with the anxiety over not feeling well. I also have some digestive (acid reflux/gerd) isssues going on

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

H iRed Ideveloped ETD last year after two flights in a short span too. You usually get it after having a cold which is why they say dont fly if you have cold .I idecded to cut my last trip to San Diego short I was already terrbiy dizzy and decided to come home
Hopefuly this will blow over for you . It took me about four months I am better but dizzes are worse If it doesnt get better get at least one more opinion from another ENT not DR DH
If you don't get better in three or four months, you might want to consider tubes in your Eustachian Tubes removed
Meantime would a low dose anti-depressant help you? Good luck and God Bless Rose

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

Hi- wow 4 mths- My dr doesn't see any fluid at all- so wouldn't put tubes in- it just feels that way- clogged.I have had a misery since taking flights one to la in early may and then 3 flights in Europe. I was diagnosed w/ Bppv- all my eng tests- vestibular were normal- tomorrow I have an MRi-- I can't drive or barely go in a car- as a passenger after I get out- I feel disoriented- slightly dizzy, sometime nauseated.- It has happened already almost every time I am in a car. in the past 3 wks. My ent said- when he ordered the MRI- and I asked- well what if it is normal- and he says- wlll then we know it is inner ear. My husband is a Dr.- and he thinks it is anxiety- so how come when I was in Europe- on 3 trains- and 3 flights - I was fine- but then when I came back- whammo.I had a slight touch of this last summer ( by the way- i don't get this in the winter ( although if we fly it is one flight there- one flight back)- I feel terrible pressure in my ears almost as soon as the car starts rolling - like I am in the airplane when it descends- I think I will be on a merrygoround of Dr.s now- unless the MRI is abnormal- My ent dr. has been giving me no meds at all- I have been wearing wrist bands( do you know what they are)- and do some vrt exercises for the past 18months- after I saw him for a begnin positonal thing I had he did an epley- it seemed to work and the exercises- and that was that. Last summer I had 2 small episodes - one after a train ride, and one in a car- so I think there must be some connection- summer, allergies , airplanes - madness is how Ii am starting to think this is- but all kidding aside-now it isn't occasional it is every time I am a passengar in a car for more than a 15 min span- I don't even know how I am going to make it to the hospital for the mri-( my husband will drive)- and get through a proceedure- I have tried sudafed, allergy shots( which my ent says are useless- saline sprays- what can I say.Keep in touch-and thanks for getting back to me

Re: EARS-SO CLOGGED NEED HELP- pLEASE

Hello,
I have had dysfunctional eustation tubes since 03. When I flew in an airplane I know exactly what your talking about. My ears felt so full, and the noise was so weird sounding. I don't know how to describe it. The whole 9 1/2 hr flight was miserable. I tried chewing gum, popping my ears, but nothing worked. The pain was so intense especially when taking off and landing. I went back to my specialist and he put tubes back in my ears that releived the fullness. I just wish the tubes would stay in longer. I had to go back to my specialist and he had to put another t tube back in my left ear. I'll have to have tubes in my ears for the rest of my life. Even if there is no fluid present they still put the tubes in my ears to give me relief of the popping sounds, stuffiness, and fullness. Isn't there some type of surgery for dysfunctional eustation tubes?
