What exactly is the white gunk on tonsils during tonsillitis?

I just recently got over mono-induced tonsillitis, and had the usual swollen tonsils with the white patches on them.

I had read previously that someone said these white patches were pus but I don't believe that.

Mostly because, as I was getting over my tonsillitis, I had drainage in my throat which caused me to cough a lot, and I was coughing up chunks of the white crap from my tonsils...blech.

So what exactly is that white gunk?

Are you on antibiotics for the tonsillitis?

If so and you have been on them a while the white patches may be oral thrush. The white chunks are most likely something more annoying and chronic. If you have reoccuring throat and tonsil infections.. you may have septic tonsils and tonsil stones.. basically your tonsils may contain resistant bacterial infections with in the fester and ooze out on a periodic basis reinfecting the area.. in the process this infection and bits of food and drainage are getting caught on the tonsils as well where they will calcify until you hachk them out.

Have you been to an ENT about your tonsillitus or are you just seeing a GP? It might be worth getting your tonsils inspected by an ENT to see if you have to have them removed. The only way to get rid of sepic tonsils and/or tonsil stones is to remove the offenders.

Sincerely,
MG

Re: What exactly is the white gunk on tonsils during tonsillitis?

???

I said that I just got OVER the tonsillitis...as in a couple weeks ago...

I don't believe these were "tonsil stones."

I went to the doctor and they gave me prednisone because my tonsils were so swollen, and as the swelling went down the white patches on my tonsils while they were swollen began to come off as I coughed. I could pick bits of the white patches off with a Q tip as well.

AND, as I said, I had MONO...although they didn't catch it at first, I was on amoxycillin for awhile and got a rash, when I went back they found I had mono and told me to stop the antibiotics.

All I wanted was to know was what these white patches on the OUTSIDE of the tonsils were made of, when they are swollen. I've got the rest of it under control, but thanks.

Re: What exactly is the white gunk on tonsils during tonsillitis?

My apologies. However, your first post was ambiguous in nature when it came to a time line and treatment you pursued.

As you stated originally:
I was coughing up chunks of the white crap from my tonsils.

This is almost a textbook description of tonsil stone expulsion.

As you stated originally:
So what exactly is that white gunk?

Ambiguous. Gunk? By definition, gunk is any sticky, greasy, or viscous residue or accumulation. This would imply a build up on your tonsils of external origin. You should have used patches if that was your true concern.

So given you had been on strong antibiotics for tonsillitis these past couple of weeks and you are still suffering from mono. The shedding of oral white patches from the throat and tonsils are expected and directly linked to your infectious mononucleosis.

In layman's terms..
White patches are a common companion of many throat infections, from the painful stab of strep to mono or thrush infections. Your body sometimes produces soft, white debris that collects in tiny indentations in the tonsils called crypts. This gathering of dead skin, mucus, or tonsil drainage is known as a tonsil lith.. aka tonsil stone.. [lith is the medical terminology for stone]. It may taste bad and give you bad breath for a while, but it's harmless and will usually go away over time.

Treatments to speed the removal of such matter and patches are.. gargling with peridex mouth wash in the AM and PM.. or listerine even. If the tonsil liths persist and continue final treatment often requires a tonsillectomy.

Hopefully this is more along the lines of what you were after.
