Orange coated tongue

Please if anyone has experienced this, let me know.

My tongue has an orange coating on it that can be somewhat brushed off. I brush it twice a day. When the coating is there, my tongue feels weird. It also seems a little swollen. I went to the doc, who gave me oral antifungal meds but didn't test it for a fungus. When I e-mailed him that another doctor who my husband knows suggested that I should have had a little scraped off to be tested and I should have been referred to a dermatologist, he e-mailed back basically calling me a hypochondriac and denied the referrals. Big ego I guess!

Anyway, the oral meds didn't make it go away, so now I'm wondering what is causing this.

Re: Orange coated tongue

Hi,
Is any of the medicine you are taking orange? also, are you brushing your teeth with baking soda peroxide toothpaste? For some reason this toothpaste leaves a coating in my mouth...I have to rinse several times to prevent it. HTH

Re: Orange coated tongue

There are certain antibiotics that can change the color of your tongue as well. If the mouthwash hasn't cleared it up go back to your MD and show him in person. Most thrush that you get on your tongue is white not orange. This alone would have made me question the antifungal mouthwash.

Sincerely,
MG

PS The only other thing because I was curious and asked my SIL MD. Orange tongue coatings can be a sign of chronic vomiting or an improper diet lacking in the omega fatty acids. Have you been ill? Vomiting a lot?

Re: Orange coated tongue

I have not taken any meds in a long time, until the oral antibiotics which I started for the orange tongue.

Thank you for talking to your sister-in-law for me. I wish I had a doctor in the family!! I'm thinking the orange coating is caused by dry mouth because no matter how much I drink my mouth feels dry. But what is causing my dry mouth? I was tested in March for diabetes and it was negative.

Re: Orange coated tongue

I have not been ill. Just have had chronic right sided flank, abdominal and lower back pain for over 1 1/2 years. It's not liver or kidney according to bloodwork and ultrasounds. I don't have a gallbladder any more.

Re: Orange coated tongue

Wondering if I've had a salivary gland issue all this time, thinking it was TMJ. I was sucking on sour candy tonight to see what would happen, and the area behind my back molars on the left is very irritated feeling now. It felt fine before I sucked on the candy. Really am wondering if I have dry mouth due to salivary gland blockage which is causing my orange coated tongue because there is not enough saliva to kill the bacteria.
I really can't pursue this with my doc. When I saw him he had no clue, so he called ENT. They suggested the oral antifungals. He then told me if they didn't help, it would eventually go away on it's own. Later I e-mailed him and asked for a referral to a dermatologist as a doctor friend of my husbands had suggested, and his response was:
"I believe you don't have any true medical condition in regards to the tongue, and have a tendency to overly focus on extremely subtle detail. At this time, I don't think any referrals are appropriate."

Sound like I'm being called a hypochondriac? Well maybe I am because I've had symptoms for months and months that no doctor has known enough or cared enough to diagnose. They didn't even diagnose my TMJ, I did. The second ENT I saw said it could be myofascial pain. But the first ENT I saw, back in July 2006, said there was nothing wrong with me.
Like I said, they are all connected in my medical plan, so I feel like I can't go to anyone.

Re: Orange coated tongue

Have you looked into trying to see and endocrinologist? If you are not preggers or sick.. your dry mouth analysis may have something. Maybe there is a pituitary, or adrenal issue going on.

I am not sure if the dermatologist is the right way to go. I have one he is great.. but he tends to deal with my outside.. not my inside. Last thought I have at the moment is my SIL recommends you change your GP out for and IM (internal medicine specialist) They will pursue the anomalies a bit more aggressively. I don't think you are a hypochondriac.. otherwise I am one. If something bothers me I am not going to wait and see. If I did I would still be suffering from 9 mo out of the year sinus infections and not be on tract to deal with my failing thyroid. Keep after it. We will help where we can.

Now you have me on a crusade to find out more on orange tongue coatings.

MG

Re: Orange coated tongue

My tongue has been swollen the last few days. It feels too big for my mouth, and the edges in front have imprints from the back of my teeth. It's really bothering me. I'm going to switch my doctor, but because of how my HMO works, if I've already been seen for something sometimes it takes weeks to be seen again for the same.
