Can I fly with an ear infection?

I have an ear infection and I have to fly next week from Illinois to Arizona....Is it ok to do so and are there any risks involved?

Re: Can I fly with an ear infection?

All I can tell you is I had an ear inflammation one time and I flew, boy it sure gave me a really bad ear infection. I'd check with your doctor before going.

Re: Can I fly with an ear infection?

I wouldn't do it. Unless you want to be in the most excruciating pain of your entire life. You may even rupture your ear drum, which is possibly one of the most intense type of pain you'll ever feel in your life.

Honestly, I wouldn't do it. I would wait until it's all healed up first. Otherwise you're totally asking for trouble.

Re: Can I fly with an ear infection?

Make sure that you are on antibiotics.. normally you should get some relief in 48-72 hours. Also get on some strong decongestant as well. Most people get pressure shift ear popping in the ears during flight. An untreated ear infection can cause extreme pain and ruptured ear membranes (Did this when I was in 4th grade.. it was worse than childbirth.. and my son's birth put me in the hospital for a month). You can fly with an infection but it is going to hurt.

Are you on medication for it? Do you have allergies?

Main things to get gunk out of the sinuses and thus ears quickly:
1) Antibiotics
2) Decongestant
3) pH balanced Saline (Pretz), steriodal(Nasonex), and antihistamine/decongestant (Astelin) nasal sprays
4) Drink lots of water and continually sip water on the plane

Antibiotics should have an effect within 48-72 hours. If no relief is felt you may need a different antibiotic or to test and be sure it isn't fungal in nature.

Good luck.
