 Change in sense of smell after recovering from Sinex addiction?
I am FINALLY able to breathe after being hooked on Sinex (Oxymetazoline HCL) for over a year.
After finally realizing that I didn't have a chance of getting off the sprays on my own, I saw my ENT for the first time on February 4th, 2008 and he was absolutely wonderful. He knew instantly how to fix my nose spray issue. An injection of a corticosteroid, a prescription for Nasonex and antibiotics later, and I've been off the sprays since the night before my appointment with him. I am happy to say that it is less than ONE WEEK into my treatment and I am Sinex-Free and Congestion-Free!! For the first time in a year and a half, I don't have to freak out if I leave the house without a bottle of Sinex!
The only weird thing that I've noticed is that my sense of smell is really "off". Everything smells sickeningly sweet. My friends all joked that change in sense of smell is the first sign of pregnancy, but I know 100% that I am not pregnant. I'm positive it is due to the prolonged nose spray use.
Does anyone know where I can read up on this "side effect" of prolonged nose spray use? Has anyone experienced it? Did your sense of smell eventually come back? Right now, I'm barely eating because I can't stand the way anything smells. Opening the pantry in the kitchen makes me want to vomit because the smell is so strong. My diet consists of chocolate High Protein Boost shakes because they are the only things that don't make me gag, and my husband isn't too happy about the fact that I'm not too keen on cooking right now.
If anyone has experience in this area, or can point me in the direction of reading materials, that would be fantastic! I plan to ask my doctor when I follow-up with him in 2 weeks, but I'm the type of person who likes to find out as much as possible, as soon as possible!
