Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

I am 31 yo male in great shape. I dont get sick often but I got a nasty cold this year, that seemed to go away on its own. About 2 weeks after I started getting plugged ears and a lot of pressure on my face and upper jaw (when going to sleep). Then the imbalance started. I feel like I am on a small boat in rough seas. All day long I feel like this.

I went to the doctor and she said I had BPPV, and if I did these excerises it would go away....it didnt. So I went back and she gave me a Z-pack and mucinex D. First day after the double dose of the Zpack I felt better, but by the 5th and last day of the Zpack the feeling wasnt gone. That was 5 days ago. Now I feel just as off balance and the pressure in my sinuses is back. Also my anxiety level when working or doing comlex tasks, like typing, is through the roof. I feel like I could strangle someone. Now my ear is sore off and onsome pressure, but the imbalance feeling is unrelenting. No matter what I do it will not go away. I have an appointment with a neurologist later this week.

I guess, Im just hoping someone else will tell me they have felt this way too. Thanks for listening, have a good day.

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

Hi, there. I've had dizziness for five months and have been exploring lots of possibilities, from inner ear virus to migraine associated vertigo. Turns out I have a very bad sinus infection (CT scan revealed this--I didn't have too many nasal symptoms...just extreme fatigue and dizziness; recently some front upper tooth pain). I'm still not sure if this is causing the dizziness or not, but I'm hoping the meds can fix it. I've been taking augmentin for 7 days with no cure yet. I'm supposed to take it for another two weeks and then it's IV antibiotics or surgery. By the way, I took a zpack early on and it did nothing for me, which is why we thought it wasn't an infection. However, sinus infections can be hard to treat. You might want to consider getting a CT scan of your sinuses. I also felt very depressed and anxious when the dizziness was very bad. I never felt off-balance, in the sense of not being able to stand, but rather sort of dizzy with weird perceptions/depersonalization, etc.

Anyway, just wanted to chime in in case you are dealing with something like that. It could also be vestibular neuritis, which is an inner ear virus...BPPV usually causes spinning sensations when you move your head in certain ways. The spells usually doesn't last very long, like a few minutes or so.

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

Hey thank you. Well by off balance, not like Im going to fall over. I just bump into things and get really frustrated a lot. I had something similar last year and a young doctor gave me Avelox, or moxifloxican (spelling?). It was a bad med with wicked side effects but when I stopped taking it, done! Everything ended and I felt so much better. I have also tried penicillin based meds last time and they did nothing. All augmentin did was destroy my insides. I dont think its BPPV because I'm "dizzy" all the time. I just want this to be over.

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

Hi, there--

Wow--that med you mentioned is related to Levaquin, I think, which is what they wanted to give me. I said no b/c my mom said it gives you really bad/weird nightmares and is just a freaky medicine...also can cause bad joint pain, but I hear that it is the best kind of med for sinus stuff. What kinds of side effects did you have from the Avelox? I'm dealing with the Augmentin stomach problems by taking 2 Culturelles (probiotic) a day and it's working so far...no troubles but no success either!!

It's comforting to me to know others have dizziness with sinus stuff...the docs seem to not entirely believe it's possible...I wonder if it's something with the eustachian tubes?

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

Violet,
Well Avelox is a double edged sword. I didnt have bad dreams but it made me really dizzy for the ten days I was on it. However, when I was done taking it, the sinus problems were completly gone. It really only made me dizzy, I cant remeber any other bad stuff. I would probably take it again to get rid of this misery. I cannot under any circumstances take augmentin, will not do it. So in that case if the Avelox was my only other option, I'd do it. It will work, it just sucks.

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

felicia--

While Meniere's does stick around, I think there are some good treatments for it that can help ease symptoms. I'm also wondering if vestibular rehabilitation therapy might be a good option for you, because of your medical history. Have you talked to your doctor about that? It can help people with balance issues and might be useful for you...

Take care,
Violet

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

I went back to the doctor today. She said that my xrays showed no signs of a sinus infection, big suprise right! So I bit the bullet and told her to give me the Avelox. It worked before so Im hoping it will work again. I have a CT scheduled in two weeks then I go to the neurologist/ENT. I know the Avelox is a harsh drug, but I also know it works. Im willing to give it another try. I took one already this mornig and I know this sounds crazy but I can tell a difference. My nose has started draining and the dizziness is less than yesterday. Im hoping!

That is good news about the med! Weird about the scan--I hope you get some answers soon about what's going on. Dizziness can be very tricky to diagnose. Keep us posted!

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

I took one of the seven day treatment my doctor prescribed, already the dizziness has subsided, my sinuses are draining and the ringing in my ears has gone away. Still a little sinus pressure on the teeth especially but its not as bad as this morning. If you dont mind the side effects and have what you think is a sinus infection, try the avelox. I cant complain at all. Im a little sore in the joints but, not too bad.

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

I'm going through something similar right now. I've been experiencing dizziness - like I'm on a boat or have a constant buzz - since October of last year. I've been to see 2 specialists already and no one knows what's wrong with me. I've had a MRI, blood test, ENT, eye exam, balance tests - all came back normal. This new specialist has scheduled me in for more tests, but they are still 4 months away! By then, it would have almost been 1 year that I've been experiencing this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I could look into in the meantime? I've noticed that it's become worse in the last 2 months. Even my boss has noticed that my condition is worse.

I'm finding it harder to concentrate and I'm worried about my ability to drive if it becomes worse. HELP, I'm desperate!

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

hi wang i just got back from ent doc who is a top doc in philadelphia, he said my ears are great. but all the off balance that i feel is related to my brain. what???? Let me tell ya my story real quick, i had ever test you can get mri ,,ct, scans, bloodwork, eng, emg, everything. well all are good, so after 5 months doc tells me to do vestibular therapy. i have to retrain my brain to compensate my balance, so basiclly my neurons are not crossing right and i gotta fix it. OMG!!!! I have serious balance problems i don't fall but feel pulled forward or to the side, i come down my steps and at the bottom i still feel like i'm coming down the steps even when there is no more steps. i sit and i feel pulled one way or the other, i get nauseus. sorry for spelling.anyhow i start vestibular therapy next tues june 17th i hope it works and i hope the top doc was right.ask your doc about vrt therapy maybe it can help you good luck hollygirl

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

This may be what your doctor was talking about: Mal de Debarquement. Do a little research & see if this may be your problem.

BTW, I took Levaquin for some sinus problems as well, but I didn't have that much side effects... It's not half as scary to take as taking Prednisone! Don't be afraid to take Levaquin if it will help!

Re: Not exactly dizzy but off-balance...Shed some light please!

Hi, I am an ENT nurse and wanted to see if anyone tried, or the Dr gave any handouts on the epley maneuver. We always have patients that come in dizzy and require an audio visit after the Dr. We do this simple maneuver by turning to the side while laying down. We have a lot of patients who scream, curse and even throw up while doing this because they get very dizzy. If this happens we send the patient for an ENG, which is a test that they do that lasts 90min measuring the eye movements and ear pressure. Vertago is usually caused by free-floating calcium carbonate crystals in an area of the inner ear called the posterior semicircular canal, which is part of the vestibular system. The epley maneuver repositions these particals.

Would that benign tumor be a cholesteatoma? I have one and I am scheduled for surgery on July 1. At first, the ENT thought it was otosclorosis, but a specialist said he believed it was a cholesteatoma after looking in my ear. The CT scan proved it. I have tried to find info on these boards about people having surgery for a cholesteatoma, and haven't not been able to find out much (not like the amount for otosclorosis). I would love to correspond with someone who has been through this or knows about it. Most people don't. I have had persistent ear problems for many years and my symptoms are a reduced hearing threshold (has been getting worse) and tympanograms with trouble in the affected ear (has never gotten a peak, usually flat or a small mound). Any advice would be appreciated.
