Netti Pot and Ears

I have ear fullness, aching, and ringing in my ears from sinus issues and TMJ. I have read two theories about the netti pot - 1 that is good for blocked ears and 2 that it should not be done. Does anyone know which is right? Has anyone had a positive experience using the netti pot for ears?

Thanks,

glowing4

Re: Netti Pot and Ears

The rule of thumb on this is don't use the neti pot if you have sinus infection. So if you have any soreness or redness and/or yellow or green colored snot then you should not use the neti as it may help pass the infection into the ear. If you don't have an infection and are just congested in the nose then it is very helpful, i'm used it multiple times and makes my head and ears feel clearer.

Re: Netti Pot and Ears

I disagree. I've searched a few different ways online and cannot find anything that says do not use a neti pot while you have a sinus infection. I did see if you have frequent nose bleeds not to use. I wish we could post links.. i'm interested in what you found

The neti pot saved me when i had a very stubborn sinus infection this winter. I used it up to 4x a day (my allergist recommended it, he was the one treating me for the infection). It helped relieve the sinus pain, wash current phlegm and mucous out. It is tricky with my right ear though, i frequently have fluid in my middle ear. If i tip my head too far when irrigating, the ear gets worse. I just have to keep trying (when congested) but not tip my head too far. Most sites also recommend that you do not swallow when using a neti pot.. that can cause pain and ear issues

One of my coworkers uses it to help unblock her ears. Maybe it is just the warm water running across the opening? It is a fairly inexpensive thing to try.

Just to make sure.. you are thinking of using the neti pot for Sinus Irrigation and have the side benefit for the ears?

Good luck!

Re: Netti Pot and Ears

Thanks to both of you for responding. I really appreciate it. I do have some sinus congestion, but it is mostly a feeling or my left ear being congested and ringing in that ear. Wondering if given that circumstance if the netti pot is a wise thing to do or not.

Thanks,
