Unhappy Just had a tonsillectomy... Uvula is swelling like crazy

Hi, I just had my tonsils taken out (Aug 22) and I'm having trouble sleeping/swallowing due to my Uvula has swollen 2-3 times it's normal size and is actually resting on my tounge. Beleive me I can feel it. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what you did about it.

I'm currently taking Hydrocodone (liquid vikiden) they have me on some antibiotics and steriods (don't remember what for)

Swelling is normal and will last for a while. That is why you are on the steroids, without them everything would be much worse. I was on 1 tsp. prednisolone every 12 hours, you can ask if that can be increased but by now you should be over the worst of it. Slowly melting ice chips in your mouth as well as wearing an ice collar will help.

The steroids will help greatly with pain and discomfort, just remember to wean off of them slowly so you don't have a rebound effect.

People here are in the middle of back-to-school. If someone does not reply right away you can always try a search. Hope you are feeling better.

Re: Just had a tonsillectomy... Uvula is swelling like crazy

I had that problem when I had my tonsillectomy, however it happened during surgery and the doctor "trimmed" my uvula which actually turned out to be him completely cutting it off-making my recovery much more difficult than the average persons. Anyway, the steroids are to help bring the swelling down. I took those too and they came in pill form and had to be crushed up and mixed with something for me to take them. I would notify your doctor about the swelling of your uvula and maybe you can get some more steroids because that can become dangerous-it could give you breathing problems if it gets too swollen. Good luck!

Re: Just had a tonsillectomy... Uvula is swelling like crazy

Hi Spider

I just got my tonsils removed on Aug. 21st, and have experienced Uvular swelling and such as well.

I notice my worst times are when I try to sleep, and first then when I wake up.

Luckily you're on steroids and strong pain meds. I was prescribed NO steroids, NO antibiotics, and only 10 Tylenol 3's, so I'm pretty much dying over here

For the swelling, suck on some ice chips or drink ice water; it also helps if you have a cool compress around your neck. Be sure to keep hyrdated as I have found this to REALLY help decrease my swelling. And try to eat something every couple of hours...

Goodluck, and hopefully we'll recover soon.

Re: Uvula is thrashed

I'm 41 & just had it done on Sep. 17th, 2008. My uvula is flopping in the breeze, ridiculously painful and huge! I was only given hydrocodone and no steroids for swelling. I'd sure like to know what the hell they did to it and why it is was even involved in the process. I thought I was going to choke on it more than once.

Today is day 5 for me and the recovery has been very gradual. To make matters much worse, my doctor prescribed pain medicine that was 7% alcohol. I tell you it was just like taking straight Listerine!! It burned something fierce and I choaked on it every time. Then when I went to renew it, my pharmacist said they had a 1% solution that required only half the dosage on top of it. He couldn't believe I was taking that. WAY better - but the damage was done.

I'm going to see my doctor in 5 days and he will have some explaining to do.

Re: Uvula is thrashed

I am 29, had my tonsils out June 10th...almost 4 months ago. My uvula has been swollen ever since! My doctors swear that it is from allergies. I am going to see a specialist in 2 weeks. I thought having your tonsils out was supposed to STOP sore throats? Mine is worse than ever.
