Throat Infection that has lasted for FOUR WEEKS already... HELP!!

Dear All,

I have had a throat infection since LAST MONTH and am getting extremely NERVOUS.

I started off having mucus in my throat (and that's basically all I had in the beginning). After seeing a doctor, he claimed that there was an infection in my throat and prescribed me some antibiotics and other medications. I finished the medicines, but the condition didn't turn well. Since the condition was not bothersome then, I didn't continue seeing the doctor.

However, my circumstance got worsen last week - I got a fever, had severe tiredness, and my throat started to HURT! I went to a new doctor on Saturday (Aug. 23) and he prescribed me some antibiotics again. But the antibiotics haven't been effective at all!!

I firmly believe this is a viral infection (since antibiotics did not work), but I hear that viral infection should only last for 1 week at most!! Could anyone please advise? This has lasted for one whole month already and I am getting worried.

Thank you for all of your time.

what meds have you tried? allergies could be adding "fuel to the fire"
reflux/LPR can also have some of the same symptoms. Do a search in here on LPR...gcsmithjr has posted the symptoms

Thank you so much for your reply!

Here's is a list of medicines I am/was taking:

(July 29th to August 5th)
Phenergan
Aerius
Klacid
Flemizyme

(August 9th to August 15)
Doxycycline 100mg (I went to the STD center thinking I had "something", but all the tests came out negative)

(August 23 to now)
Amoxicillin 500mg capsule

I have also been taking some vitamins (vitamins, airbornes, EmergenC), hoping to boost up my immune system.

I did some research on both Reflux and LPR. I think my symptoms match some of those listed for LPR; however, I do not have coughs or hoarseness. Instead, I have postnasal drip and sore throat.

I sometime feel dizzy and tired as well. I also experienced a little headache a few times.

I am getting more and more worried each day =(

In addition, I wanted to add that my brother was the one who had postnasal drip first (I think he passed it on to me). However, he recovered in a few days after seeing a doctor and taking some medicine.

Therefore, at the beginning, the symptom I had was postnasal drip. But then my case got more and more complicated and now I have all the symptoms I listed in the previous message: Throat infection, post-nasal drip, dizziness, tiredness, headache (a few times), swollen nose, difficulty swallowing, and fever (once).

I would appreciate any help/suggestions. Thank you!

i would still try some zyrtec or claritin. Probably shouldn't be taken with the Aerius. Does your throat feel better when you don't have as much drainage?

The initial stages of lyme disease start with cold/flu like symptoms...tests for lyme are unreliable, and for that reason many advise seeing a Lyme Literate Medical Doctor who may advise doing a Western Blot.

If you choose not to pursue this route, I would recommend keeping a journal of your symptoms because IF you have lyme and/or coinfections, the symptoms may ebb and wane, or simply change...

I would avoid the use of any steroids until your condition responds to treatment.
