Hoarse for a month now! Scared of the worst! - Ear, Nose & Throat Message Board

Hi everyone,

I will admit first of all that i am a chronic worrier and always think the worst and read the worst when i look up symptoms online.

I did have a cold about a month and half ago stuffed up sneezing , sore throat etc..
I also developed a hoarse voice about a month ago and it is still with me!

The first few weeks i just though it was because of the cold and throat clearing when i had the cold but my cold symptoms have been gone for awhile and i still have this hoarse raspy voice.

I do feel like i have thick mucus at the very back of my throat almost way back behind my nose and i have to keep snorting to try and clear it but it still comes back.

I have no sore throat, light coughing now and then nothing much - i blow my nose or when i can expell some of the mucus that i feel it is white and thick.

I also started taking nasonex a few days ago to see if that would help - it has helped thin the mucus but my voice had still not changed back to normal.

I have myself convince i have throat cancer and am starting to get anxiety over this.

I was at the dr last week and she said my thraot looked fine and chest was fine and told me to use the nasonex.

Help - what are the chances odf throat cancer??

Hi Cath..this is my first time on this site...and I am hoping for some help with my hoarse voice. I have had it for about 4 months and a lot of the time I can barely speak at all...I have always had problems with allergies and it has often caused problems with my voice but never like this! I have tried things for acid reflux, mucus, etc. but nothing seems to help.
Unfortunately, I lost my job over a year ago and do not have health insurance and cannot afford to go to the doctor. And since I can't talk, it is quite difficult to find a job!
A local ENT would not even look at me without $348 up front and right now that is impossible.
I hope you are better now and if anyone has any suggestions, I would be eternally grateful!

Hi there,
That is crazy that you have to pay that much to see a dr! We have free health care here in Canada and that is the way it should be everywhere as far as I'm concerned.
I dont understand that - like what if you found a large lump or were really sick are you saying you would have to pay to see a dr? if so that is Insane!

My voice did eventually come back - i also went out and bought a mist humidifier and that seemed to help too. You should try some flonase or nasonex that may help?

My voice is hoarse for over 4 months now. I don't know whats causing this as well. I went to ENT today and he performed a fiber optic Laryngoscopy and
said everything looks fine. It may be causing by Laryngopharyngeal Reflux but he could not see any redness or inflammation. I do have some symptoms of LPR.
If your problem started just after a bad cold don't worry its not cancer. You may try steam inhalations with few drops of eucalyptus oil.
