Absolutely Desperate!!! ear problem

My husband has been suffering for 10 years with an ear problem that no dr seems to take seriously! when someone knows something is wrong with their body, they know! my husband is the type to not complain and just lives with things but he can no longer take this and is so frustrated! he saw and ENT 5 years ago who checked him over for 30 seconds and then said you are fine! he has seen a family dr who is garbage who said you are fine and he is not fine!!! he went to a hearing specialist to rule that out and the dr said he would refer him to a specialist if that test came out normal and it did considering hearing IS NOT his problem! his problem is this....deep in his ear almost going into his neck he has discomfort, it feels like his ear is always plugged like when on a plane or like it is full of water and once in a blue moon it will pop and he has relief for a day or 2 but then it returns, he says it can be very painful...the dr insists its allergies, we know it is not! we have tried meds for that with no relief, this is all year round and all day long and we have had enough! no one will take anytime to even find out what this maybe and what can be done to correct it! we are at our wits ends and after his appointment today and the dr REFUSING to refer him he has just had enough! we feel like no one is listening and just because you can look into an ear does not mean you have solved the problem because you dont see anything! it doesnt take a dr to realize that!

Re: Absolutely Desperate!!! ear problem

I have something called Otitis. Apparently my Eustachian tubes in my middle ear are damaged (from flying to much in unpressurized airplanes), and they do not change pressure very well anymore. It can cause fluid to build up, as well as pressure which causes pain, once in a while a loss of hearing, and also a feeling of them being blocked up. I've had it for roughly 5 years, and it's a come and go thing that presents itself with Post Nasal Drip. We tried Cortico Steroids for almost 6 months to try and clear it up, but it didn't help in the least bit. And since than, we've just let it run through it's cycles.

You might check up on Otitis.

Re: Absolutely Desperate!!! ear problem

I just created a thread on this problem too, with ears clogged feeling cut off from the environment and feeling as if a person is a mile away when speaking next to them. It started more than 2 weeks ago and it has gotten better for a day or two. I am so scared, will this go away?? Why are so many people having the same problem and yet NO ONE has seemed to find an answer or a solution?

Re: Absolutely Desperate!!! ear problem

It does sound like allergies or a related condition tat is blocing the eustachian tubes. couple questions...

Has he had a tympanogram - to see if the eustachian tubes are operating properly
Has he tried the Neddi Pot to clear out his sinuses
Long hot showers can help too...
There's also something called an ear popper he may want to try - which can open the eustachian tubes for him.

Re: Absolutely Desperate!!! ear problem

Also Very rare but some folks have suffer from Otic Barotrauma - "blocked ears" following any procedure where the patient has general anaesthesia.

The condition usually only impacts one ear although one or two bilateral cases have been reported. This only occurs when the MD uses Nitris Oxide as part of the sedation process.

If you have a history of problematic eustachian tube issues and then have general anaesthesia you are more prone to this condition - If too much Nitris Oxide is used or if it is forced in too quickly the gas is forced into the middle ear cavity and can cause to ear fullness.

just a theory - which may or may not be pertinint depending on your surgical history....
