Constant clearing of throat, coughing, hoarseness, hell and more HELP!!!

So ive had this problem for a little more than a year and its driving me CRAZY and affecting every part of my life in a really negative way. I have to clear my throat almost every minute sometimes more or less. A constant cough accompanies this throat clearing. My throat feels very congested at all times sometimes it is painful to talk, but always difficult. My sinus's are all messed up as well. I cough so hard that it hurts my balls sometimes and hurts my stomach, making it hard for me to pee and making me go number 2 more often it seems. I cough so hard that my head hurts and my voice will go Hoarse for weeks at a time. Another symptom is I have this tickling in my throat occasionally and the only way to get rid of it is by coughing. Also, I quit smoking more than a year and a half ago and it seems that ever since I have felt like crap. I dont have insurance so its really hard to figure out what is wrong. My family doctor thought that it could be a polyp or a possible tumor and recomended that i see an ENT and have them take a scope down my throat to figure out whats wrong. My doctor also said that it could be GERD, and i was on Protonix for 4 months with no notable difference. Next, I finally went to the county hospital and then got an appointment with an ENT. I finally got to the appointment and the long awaited scope down my nose. THe doctor said I was completly fine.. I was shocked. He said that the problem must be either GERD or postnasal drip. Well, I already did the GERD meds so it couldnt be that, So he recomended me use a neti pot (which i already had tried) and perscribed me a nasal spray for post nasal drip. Saying that it should start working in 2 weeks. Well i took the spray for a month and nothing happined. I also have asthma by the way which is pretty well under control, but this is clearly not asthma.

I have tried nearly EVERYTHING trying to figure out what the HELL is wrong with me I have tried fasting, refraining from gluten for months, refraining from dairy for months, neti pots, drinking large amounts of water, lots of exercise, GERD Meds, nasal spray, went to a special chiropractor, antibiotics, prednisone (steroid), qvar steroid inhaler, and many other things but nothing has helped i am beyond frustrated and this problem makes nothing in life fun and makes me quite miserable. If anyone has ANY advice or recommendations I would be most grateful.

Diagnoised with "Dehiscent Superior Semicircular Canal Syndrome"

Hi every one--after many years of being sick in the morning--being dizzy-walking around like a drunk-in person and , oh yeah, lets not forget, the Medrol packs-antibiotics and my post menopausal issues--ct scans-blood work, etc etc, you get the picture--my EENT told me I had this issue.
I would like to know if any one else has this issue and how have they managed to incorporate it into their lives?
Thanks .

Re: Constant clearing of throat, coughing, hoarseness, hell and more HELP!!!

Hi direwolflove222. There are several things that cause a chronic dry cough: asthma, allergies, post-nasal drip and GERD/LPR. Many of us have several of these at one time.

It does sound like you may have reflux. It may not be GERD though. It may be LPR. There are tons of LPR threads on the acid reflux board. If it is reflux, it usually takes twice a day PPI's for several months to really see a difference. In addition, it takes diet and lifestyle changes. It is extremely hard to keep LPR under control. Some have more success than others. Your symptoms of throat clearing, coughing and hoarseness all fit with the LPR.

I found that the reflux was irritating my lungs and sinuses giving me more symptoms.

I have LPR. I also went with my mom to a top ENT who diagnosed her with multiple things. SHe has your same symptoms plus more. Based upon what the ENT told her, here is what I recommend. Keep hydrating and using the nasal sprays. There is a new gel spray that I like. You might try taking Mucinex for a couple weeks to see if it helps. I'd try taking the PPI's twice a day. If you can't see a doctor, Prilosec may help. It isn't always as effective though. If you aren't taking allergy meds, you might also try taking an antihistamine such as Claritin or Zyrtec for a few weeks also to see if it helps. Make changes in your diet. Avoid fatty and fried foods, citrus and tomato foods and beverages, caffeine, chocolate and spicy, alcohol and smoking. Also, raising the head of your bed by 6 inches should let gravity help you.

By the way, reflux can trigger asthma and coughing as well. I had a severe asthma flare and after months found out that I had "silent" reflux irritating my lungs and flaring the asthma. It actually took strong reflux treatment in addition to the asthma meds to get things back under control.

Re: Constant clearing of throat, coughing, hoarseness, hell and more HELP!!!

Sorry you are having such a hard time. I have had years of similar problems, no thanks to all the doctors in my life. I just read Mountain Reader's post and she was right on with everything. I have had the scope down my throat four times now and my throat is red and swollen. I am taking prilosec two times a day an half an hour before meals. Along with all the things Mountain Reader said I am suppose to stop eating three hours before meals. I am going to try and do what he says but I always like to eat in the evening. My husband says, "why go to the doctor if I don't do what he says?

Another thing I have is MAC which is a tb type bacteria in my lungs. My pulmonary specialists found the bacteria last April after infection after infection in my lungs. This also causes tons of mucus. I am slowly making progress the more I do what I am told.

I have to go to bed. I will continue to chat at anoother time. Hang in there. You are the one that has to get to the right doctor. Don't give up.

Hey there, not sure if you got a reply on this or are still having this problem, I'd like to suggest you try a humidifier while you're sleeping. If your ENT doesn't see any tumors maybe you have allergies? I'm not a doctor but my fiancé has a pretty constant dry cough, it drives me nuts. We use the humidifier and he seems to not be bothered. Is your cough dry? Do you get mucous? Anyways I know that wasn't much help but I feel for you. Take care.
