It might also be middle ear pressure which could be from an infection, sinuses, or something else. If it's that bad, I'd get it checked out. You don't necessarily have to have an external ear infection in order to get pressure buildup in your middle ear. I have a dog with a middle ear problem that isn't from an infection. It resulted in his eardrums eventually rupturing. Before the TMs ruptured, when he yawned, he'd stop halfway through, or only open his mouth halfway, which I assume was because it was painful or uncomfortable to open his jaw fully due to the pressure in his middle ear.
