Nerve Like Pain When Touching Eye Socket & Brow Bone
For about 3 years, I get this uncomfortable sensation in my right eye socket & brow bone that occurs for several weeks and then goes away for a couple months. It comes and goes. My eyeball does not have any pain. Just the surrounding tissue above the eyeball.
I feel it when I touch my face. It is underneath the brow bone & at the top of my eye socket. It's a sharp nerve sensation that hurts when I either lightly touch the skin or rub the area. Often it will spread to the area above my outer eyebrow on the forehead. When I push on my browbone, the sharp nerve sensation will travel in a straight line to the back of my skull on the same side or travel to my ear or jaw on the same side as well.
Sometimes when it gets bad, the pain will shoot to my temple area travel to the back of my head down the back of my neck on that side. Squinting my eyes will also trigger this nerve pain.
These episodes usually don't include nasal congestion. So I don't know if this is sinus related. But the episodes seem to happen at the same time when I am feeling ill or have flu like symptoms. I am experiencing it now and have had a 99.4 F temp for a few days but the nerve pain has been going on for 3 weeks now.

Thanks for the replies. Blowing cold air doesn't seem to set it off. I still have this nerve pain since writing the original post. Currently I have no fever. So it seems that the pain is unrelated to illness since I am healthy now.
I am beginning to think this is nerve related instead of sinus.
Re: Nerve Like Pain When Touching Eye Socket & Brow Bone
After researching muscles and ligaments of the eye, I've got a strong feeling that I am suffering from "trochleitis".
"Trochleitis is inflammation of the superior oblique tendon trochlea apparatus characterized by localized swelling, tenderness, and severe pain. This condition is an uncommon but treatable cause of periorbital pain. The trochlea is a ring-like apparatus of cartilage through which passes the tendon of the superior oblique muscle. It is located in the superior nasal orbit and functions as a pulley for the superior oblique muscle. Inflammation of the trochlear region leads to a painful syndrome with swelling and exquisite point tenderness in the upper medial rim of the orbit. A vicious cycle may ensue such that inflammation causes swelling and fraying of the tendon which then increases the friction of passing through the trochlea which in turn adds to the inflammation. In this sense, it is akin to tennis elbow which involves the passing of a tendon between the lateral epicondyles. Trochleitis has also been associated with triggering or worsening of migraine attacks in patients with pre-existing migraines (Yanguela, 2002)."

Glad I found this page. I know it's been a while, but have any of you figured this out and have it treated? I've been experiencing exactly the pain you describe above the eye ball for a couple of years. Would love to hear any advice or information you have found. Thanks!!!!

Hello,
I also feel that I am suffering from trochleitis or Primary Trochlear Headache. I have had it mention to me as a possible diagnosis. I have not had the steroid shot yet. Has anybody found a successful treatment in dealing with this condition>
Re: Nerve Like Pain When Touching Eye Socket & Brow Bone
i have this same thing, found this thread as it felt nervous, tendon related. I got it after i banged heads with my dog would you believe, thought i had a black eye, but there were no signs, and still got it two months later. I can feel it when i squint or touch a point on my eyebrow, it sends shooting pain to my cheek, forehead n behind my eye, its got a bit better, but what the best thing... rest my eyebrow?
