Constant humming noise in ear

My ear problem started about 3 weeks ago.

At first I heard distorted sound on my left ear. I noticed this distortion when I was watching TV when it sounds like the sound from the TV is coming from surround sound speakers when the surround sound system was actually turned off. So I went to see my family doctor about it. He said there might be some wax inside, so he told me to put a few drops of oil for a few days and come back so he can flush them out (with water). After the 3rd day, the distortion is gone, but I still went back for my doctor to flush it out. Turns out my family doctor is on vacation so a substitute flushed it out for me. After my ears are flushed out, it felt like something was loose in my ear. When I shake my head, it seem like something was there. When I got home, I went to shower and just made my ear fill up with water to see if it will come out. Nothing came out, but then when I went to sleep, I notice my left ear (the one that just got flushed) has this constant humming noise. Its very low pitch. Kinda like subwoofer that haven't been connected properly. Its more noticeable when I'm sleeping when there's all silence.

The next morning the humming noise is still there, but there's no more loose object in my ear. Two days after that, I went to see a different doctor. He said it might be an infection, so he prescribed me these antibiotics ear drops for my ears. Before I started using the antibiotics, it went away so I didn't use them.

Two days later, the humming noise came back. It came back when I plugged ear plugs into my ear because it was too noisy to study (I had midterm exams to study for). When I took them out, it came back. That's when I started using the ear drops, but it didn't do much good so I went to see the doctor again. He recommend me seeing an ENT (Ear nose, throat) specialist.

The next day (before I went to see the ENT), the humming was gone, but I went to see the ENT anyways. He examined my ear, but didn't really do a close examination. Just observed the inside of my ear. He said there's nothing wrong with both of my ears. He said I am probably stressed from the exams. Or that I'm grinding my teeth and triggering a muscle that's near the ear. He told me to just wait and see what happens. That same night, the humming came back.

I really don't know what to do anymore. I've had exams before and I've never experienced this. I looked online, and it says I have tinnitus and its not curable and I have to somehow learn to live with it because the cause is very hard to determine. On some sites, it said stress is not a direct cause. It only alleviates the symptoms by making it louder.

I really don't know who to turn to now. Has anyone else experienced this? Is my life ruined and I can't sleep peacefully anymore?

Re: Constant humming noise in ear

Hello I had Hearing Loss Problems Most of my Teenage years and ***** 2 hearing aids,
You should never get yourself down about it don't feel ashamed of reaching for help,
I also think it is Tettnis, Tettnis is one of the problems that can cause some sort of hearing loss but is mainly treatable and lots of people come across this problem,

My best advice Is Go to your doctors explain the situation they will then do a referal form and send it to The Ear Nose And Throut Department, it took 8 months for me to be seen by a doctor at the hospital but don't worrie you will get seen to and maybe discuss with them once they ruled Tettnis you can ask what treatments are availiable.

Re: Constant humming noise in ear

I been having same humming problems in left ear recently but is a different cause for me, i was diagnosed with pernicious anemia 4 months ago but was living with it undiagnosed for many years, one of the problems was constant headaches and a feeling of pressure behind the eyes and the ear canal sort of tightening up, my hearing wasn't the best but it was clear, i noticed that as the B12 wears off the pressure feeling comes back and humming starts in only the left ear for some reason.

Symbal, how did they diagnose your Pernicious Anemia? Was it blood work or? I have the same fullness/pressure in my ears. My ENT says I have tinitus due to slight hearing loss but I don't think so.

Are you getting b12 shots? Has anything helped with the pressure?

thanks....
S.

Re: Constant humming noise in ear

Just ask for blood test and if you deficient you'll get an initial loading dose of 6 injections spread over 2 weeks, then depending on how well your liver stores B12 it is another injection every week to 3 months.

Re: Constant humming noise in ear

Right now, the humming noises aren't always there all the time. On most days when I wake up, its not there, but it comes back during the day. The only thing is now when I don't the humming noises, the distortion of hearing is back. The sounds of people talking seems to echo in my left ear. Its not as obvious as the time when I first encountered it.

Oh, also for the past like 4 days or so, I'm getting diarrhea every morning. There's no abdominal pain, but it feels like there's a lot of gas, and I gotta go. I usually go two times within an hour. The second time is more liquid than solid. After that, I can go on throughout the day without having any diarrhea. Not sure if that's related to my ear problems.

I'm 23 years old male in good health. I exercise regularly when I have some spare time, but haven't done so for the past month due to heavy school workload. Several months ago, I had a very bad cold and had vertigo (dizziness), but it has been corrected. Weight is normal, but on the lower side of normal. Same with my blood pressure.

Thumbs up Re: Constant humming noise in ear

Hey!! your life is not ruined,, I've suffering with this crap myself 4 one year strait with not much relieve at all.Its been so bad that I've been in tears many times & the emergency room in the middle of the night. After much of my own research & many doctors thanks 2 my Wife. I now have been told that mine is from my jaws TMJ. It was off & on 4,, 2 or 3 years but when i got Married & moved from NYC 2 Germany the noise went off the chart stress is part of it or magnifies. I wanted to kill myself i couldn't take it i can only sleep with earphones with a fireplace sound playing. The fireplace has a low rumble that cancels out the low hum so at least i can sleep till they finish the work I'm having done (Implants to fix my bite causing TMJ).PLEASE do as much research as U can because most Tinnitus can B fixed. Their R MANY things that can cause it. Don't listen 2 people saying U have 2 just live with it without knowing where yours comes form. Mine goes into what's called an acoustical loop,, the sound travels through the nerve system throughout the head and is so loud i can barley hear anything around me & i can't take it. My jaw is pressing a nerve near my ear so thats what causes the noise almost 24/7. So don't u give up,, OK!! Cause theirs hope 4 U.. PEACE.. Oh the earphones i use R semi in hear so the ear holes R blocked or it doesn't stop the noise.
