Perforated ear drum question, (warning...disturbing!)

I recently went to the emergency room because I thought a bug had crawled in my ear and it was killing me, I stuck a q-tip in my ear in an attempt to extract the moth but all it did was make it squirm around more. The tip had blood on it and it really freaked me out. apparently i had perforated my ear drum. I was driven to the E.R. and after a rediculous 2 1/2 hour wait a doctor put hydrogen peroxide(i think) in my ear. He used a tool to take out what seemed to be part of a moth and then announced that i had a perforated ear drum. I was prescribed antibiotics for 10days and advised to see an ENT doctor in about a week.

The hearing in my ear is not 100%. Do perforated eardrums usually give off a clogged feeling or could there actually be a piece of a dead moth clogging my hearing?

Re: will a dead bug in ear and a perforated ear drum

With a perforated eardrum your hearing may never be 100% again. There is no way to know for sure. Did the ER doc actually tell you there was a roach in your ear? Or just that you had perforated your eardrum? At any rate, this is going to take weeks to heal. I'd go see the ENT as soon as you can get an appointment...just to be sure.

Re: will a dead bug in ear and a perforated ear drum

The ER doc said i had a perforated ear drum after he removed part of what looked to be a moth.

My hearing is certainly not 100% in the injured ear. Its like something is clogging it. Like when i grind my teeth it sounds like something is clogged. or when your ear is clogged and you're in the shower, you can kind of hear the water hitting your head with that hollowlike sound. Basically it sounds like my right ear is sort of clogged.

Re: will a dead bug in ear and a perforated ear drum

I'm very interested in hearing the conclusion of this story. As for the perforated ear drum - it will heal in a few weeks and your hearing will be fine. No noticeable difference. As for the feeling you get when grinding your teeth - that is most likely the result of fluid that is stuck in the middle ear due to the perforation, wax as well.

Glad you got that taken care of! A good ENT can be a life saver at times. Continued good healing....
